What is Avamys nasal spray?

Avamys is a nasal spray which contains a corticosteroid called fluticasone furoate. It is indicated to treat rhinitis.

When inhaled through the nose, the active ingredient reduces the inflammatory response brought on by an allergy.

How does Avamys work?

An allergic reaction is an auto-immune response to a substance such as pollen, animal dander or other particles. When these allergens are present in the body, the immune system issues a response to fight the substance.

This response can lead to inflammation which, in turns, causes redness, swelling, irritation and pain in the nose.

Avamys nasal spray blocks this action, preventing the symptoms before they occur. Avamys does not provide immediate relief from the symptoms of an allergy.

How do I use Avamys?

For the best results, begin your treatment prior to exposure to an allergen. For allergies towards pollen, begin your treatment a few days before the pollen season.

Before you can use your Avamys nasal spray, you first need to prime the medicine.

Start by vigorously shaking the bottle for a couple of seconds. Due to the viscosity of the medicine, it's important to shake it so that it can be administered as a fine mist.

To prepare the bottle, press the button all the way down six times, or until you see a fine mist. When doing this, keep the bottle upright and facing away from you.

The typical dosage of this medicine is two sprays in each nostril daily. Always take the recommended prescribed dosage from the doctor. Do not use more of the medicine than you need.

Avoid getting the medicine in your eyes. If you accidentally get particles of the suspension in your eyes, wash your eyes with warm water.

What are the side effects and cautions of Avamys?

All medicine carries the risk of side effects, though not everybody experiences them. Always read the patient information leaflet before beginning your treatment.

Very rare side effects include:

  • Perforation of the nasal septum

If you experience any of the above side effects while taking Avamys, speak to your doctor.

You should not use Avamys if you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.

Avamys should be used with caution by those with:

  • Nasal injury
  • Nasal or sinus infection
  • Recent nasal surgery
  • Tuberculosis

If you think you have experienced an allergic reaction as a result of your treatment, stop taking Avamys and go straight to your nearest accident and emergency department.

Avamys should not be taken alongside any other medicines which contain corticosteroids, including inhalers, creams, tablets or injections. Please inform our doctor of any over the counter, prescribed or herbals medicines you are taking during your consultation.

Frequently asked questions about Avamys

Can I take Avamys while pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor to determine whether Avamys nasal spray is suitable for you.

How long does it take for Avamys to work?

It may take three to four days before you begin to notice an improvement. You should continue taking your medicine during the time exposed to the allergen. This will provide all round protection, preventing symptoms from arising.

How long do the effects of Avamys last?

When taken daily, Avamys can provide effective protection from rhinitis symptoms for 8 to 24 hours. However, it may take a few days before you begin to notice the effects.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your course of treatment.

What should I do if I take too much?

If you accidentally take too much Avamyl, it is unlikely to be dangerous to your health. We advise you to speak to a pharmacist or your doctor if you have any concerns.
