What is Valaciclovir?
Valaciclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat genital herpes.
The herpes virus is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. The virus can be transmitted through kissing, touching the genitals, sexual intercourse and sharing glassware or dining utensils with infected persons.
While the virus can be transmitted when in its dormant state, the virus is more infectious when active and symptoms are present.
Symptoms of herpes include:
- Blisters around the genitals or anus
- Cold sores around the mouth
- Itching and burning feeling around the genitals
- Pain when urinating
- Vaginal discharge
Once a person is infected with herpes, the virus remains in the body for life. While there is no cure, there are treatments which help the body's immune system suppress the virus back into remission.
How does Valaciclovir work?
Valaciclovir is converted into the active form, aciclovir, inside the body. It works by inhibiting the enzyme the virus needs to grow and multiply in the body's cells.
This helps the body's immune system fight the virus infection back into remission.
How do I take Valaciclovir?
To treat genital herpes, the usual dose is 500 mg twice daily, taken for three to five days.
Valaciclovir tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
Do not crush or chew the tablets.
Always take Valaciclovir as prescribed by the doctor.
Valaciclovir side effects and cautions
All medications carry the risk of side effects. It's important to educate yourself on the risks associated with the medication you are taking and to know when you should seek medical attention.
