What is Betamethasone & Neomycin Cream?

Betamethasone & Neomycin cream is used to treat:

  • Contact sensitivity reactions
  • Dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Insect bite reactions
  • Lichen planus
  • Lichen simplex
  • Psoriasis

The cream is prescribed when a secondary bacterial skin infection is present or suspected to occur alongside another skin condition.

Betamethasone & Neomycin cream is stronger than hydrocortisone creams, and is indicated to treat conditions that other steroid-based creams and ointments have not treated.

How does Betamethasone & Neomycin Cream work?

Betamethasone & Neomycin skin preparations contain a corticosteroid called Betamethasone, and an antibiotic called Neomycin.

Betamethasone reduces redness, swelling, and itching of the skin, while Neomycin kills bacteria on the skin responsible for infection.

How long does Betamethasone & Neomycin Cream take to work?

A treatment course of 7 to 10 days with Betamethasone & Neomycin cream is usually enough to improve symptoms such as flare-ups of red, inflamed, and irritated skin. Talk to your GP if signs of skin infection do not improve.


How to use Betamethasone & Neomycin Cream?

According to the patient information leaflet, the following are a guide on how to use the cream.

  1. Wash and dry your hands before applying the cream or ointment.
  2. Apply the cream or ointment in a thin layer over the affected areas of the skin, 1-2 times a day for seven days or as prescribed by your doctor.
  3. Smooth the cream or ointment on all irritated skin.
  4. Wash your hands afterwards.

It is advised not to apply Betamethasone & Neomycin cream:

  • On your face and genitals unless advised to do so by your doctor.
  • On broken skin or cuts.
  • More often or for longer than prescribed.
