What Is Istin?
Istin is a medicine used to lower blood pressure. The active ingredient of Istin is amlodipine, and the medicine is available in strengths of 5mg or 10mg tablets.

What Is High Blood Pressure?

How Does Istin Work?
Istin contains amlodipine, which is a calcium channel blocker.
A calcium channel blocker causes the muscle cells in the artery walls to relax.
When this happens, the arteries widen and blood can pass through more easily – the heart does not have to work so hard to ensure enough oxygen is pumped around the body, and therefore the blood pressure is lowered to a safer level.
How Do I Take Istin?
Istin is only available on prescription, and therefore your doctor should be able to explain to you how to take it. It’s important to take Istin exactly ask your doctor has prescribed.
Usually, Istin will be taken once a day. You can choose any time to take your medication, although it is best to take it at the same time each day.
The dose will usually start at 5mg and be changed to 10mg if needed.
You can take Istin with or without food. Istin tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
If you find pills difficult to swallow, Istin can be dissolved in water – if you choose this option, you should drink the mixture immediately.
Do not eat or drink any products that include grapefruit as this will react negatively with Istin (amlodipine).
What should I do if I forget to take Istin when I should?
If you realise you have missed a dose of Istin you should take it once you remember to. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue to take Istin as prescribed.
Do not take more Istin to make up for the dose you missed.
What should I do if I take too much Istin?
If you do take too much Istin, you should contact your doctor or go straight to the nearest hospital A&E.
Do not drive; if you have no one to drive you, you must call an ambulance. An overdose of Istin can cause dizziness and tiredness, and therefore driving is dangerous. When you go to hospital, take the packaging including the patient information leaflet for the medication as well as any remaining medication with you.

- Those who have an allergy to any of the ingredients of Istin
- Women who are pregnant (or trying to conceive) or breastfeeding
- Anyone with kidney disease or liver disease
- Anyone with heart failure
- Anyone who has had a heart attack within the last month
Who Should Get Medical Advice Before Using Istin?
Istin can be taken by some people who also require medical advice beforehand to ensure it is the correct medication. They may need a lower dose or additional tests and checks. These people include:
- The elderly since dizzy spells (a potential side effect of Istin) can cause more damage
- Anyone with liver issues
- Those with heart failure

Allergies

Signs of an allergic reaction may include:
- Chest tightening
- Dry, red and cracked skin
- Itchy, red watery eyes

Small amounts of amlodipine can pass through breast milk.
Can I Take Istin With Other Medications?

- St John’s wort (hypericum perforatum)
- Any other medication that causes lower blood pressure
- Oestrogens such as the contraceptive pill
- Corticosteroids
