What is Lyclear?
Dealing with scabies or pubic (crab) lice can be a real pain. Lyclear contains the active ingredient Permethrin.
This medicine has insecticidal properties which makes it incredibly useful to kill scabies mites and pubic lice. Any residual eggs are also killed which eliminates infestation, making it a go-to solution for anyone suffering these conditions.
What can Lyclear treat?
Lyclear is effective in treating:
- Scabies: Caused by tiny mites that burrow under your skin, scabies lead to intense itching and irritation. Lyclear quickly eliminates these mites, providing much-needed relief.
- Pubic Lice: These small parasites live in the coarse hair of the genital area, causing itching and discomfort. Lyclear both eliminates the lice and reduces further itching.
How quickly does Lyclear work?
Lyclear works fast. You will likely notice a decrease in itching and discomfort soon after applying.
Treatment should be used at least once but a second application may be needed after 7-14 days if any live lice are found during this time or if the infestation is persistent.
The second application ensures that all the mites and eggs are gone, preventing re-infestation.
How to use Lyclear cream:
- Start with clean, dry skin. Make sure there are no other creams or lotions on your skin.
- Apply the cream evenly. The exact amounts to apply depend on your surface area and can be found in the Patient Information Leaflet. E.g. adults would require more cream than children.
- Ensure that ‘hard to reach’ areas are also covered! This includes:
- Crab (pubic) lice: facial hair (beards and moustaches). Avoid your eyes but be aware that live lice or their legs may be found on your eyelashes. If found, remove carefully with tweezers.
- Scabies: under the finger and toenails, face (but not eyes), armpits and wrists
- Leave the cream on for at least 8 hours, ideally 12 hours. Do not bathe or shower during this time as it can affect absorption. One tip is to apply before bedtime and wash off the following morning.
- Wash the cream with warm, soapy water after 8-12 hours. Remember to clean your nails and any clothes or bedding which may have come into contact with the cream.
- A second application may be needed after 7-14 days to ensure complete elimination of the infestation.
- Be careful not to get the cream in your eyes as Permethrin can be irritating. If it accidentally gets in your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice if needed.
Who can use Lyclear?
Lyclear can be used in adults, the elderly and children over 2. For a child under 2, discuss with your doctor first.
How much Lyclear cream should I use?
The amount of Lyclear you need depends on your age, body size, and the severity of the condition. As a general guide:

What if I use too much Lyclear?
If you accidentally use too much, simply wash it off with soap and warm water. If you experience any irritation, consult a doctor.
Possible side effects of Lyclear:
Like all medicines, Lyclear can cause some side effects, including:
- Common (can affect up to 1 in 10 people): Itching, skin redness, tingling or prickling sensations on the skin, dry skin.
- Very rare (can affect up to 1 in 10,000 people): Skin lesions, inflamed hair follicles, reduced skin pigmentation.
If you experience any side effects which concern you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Important precautions:
- Do not use Lyclear if you are allergic to Permethrin, other pyrethrins, or any of the other ingredients.
- If you are known to be allergic to chrysanthemums or other similar plants, consult your doctor before using Lyclear.
