Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a spiral-shaped bacterium that lives in the lining of the stomach and duodenum (the upper part of the small intestine). It is one of the most common bacterial infections in the world and is linked to a range of digestive conditions, including:
Many people infected with H. pylori have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they can include bloating, nausea, burping, stomach pain, or a persistent burning sensation. Studies have found that H. pylori is present in more than 90% of people with duodenal ulcers and 70–80% of those with gastric ulcers.
If you experience ongoing digestive symptoms, testing for H. pylori can help identify a potential cause and allow you to seek appropriate treatment.
Important: This test detects H. pylori antigens in your stool. A positive result should be discussed with your GP or a healthcare professional, who can advise on next steps.
This kit uses a small stool sample to detect H. pylori antigens — proteins produced by the bacteria themselves. Because it detects the bacteria directly rather than your body's antibody response to it, this type of test (known as an HpSA, or H. pylori Stool Antigen test) is considered more useful for identifying a current, active infection.
This is an important distinction from blood antibody tests: antibodies can remain in the bloodstream long after an infection has been successfully treated, which can lead to misleading results. Stool antigen testing avoids this limitation.
The test uses immunochromatography — the same technology found in many rapid lateral flow tests — to detect H. pylori antigens in your sample. It is a qualitative test, meaning it gives a positive or negative result rather than a numerical measurement.
Results are available within 10 minutes.
Each kit contains:
You will also need a timer (such as your phone) to read the result at exactly 10 minutes.
Please note: All components can be disposed of with your normal household waste after use.
Before you begin, allow the test cassette to reach room temperature if it has been stored in the fridge. Do not open the foil pouch until you are ready to perform the test.
Read the result at exactly 10 minutes. Look at the C (Control) and T (Test) line regions on the cassette.
A line appears in both the C (control) region and the T (test) region. This indicates that H. pylori antigens have been detected in your stool sample. Any shade of colour in the T region counts as a positive result — even a faint line.
What to do: Contact your GP to discuss the result. Your doctor will advise whether further tests or treatment are needed. Do not self-treat based on this result alone.
A line appears only in the C (control) region. No line appears at T. H. pylori antigens were not detectable in your sample.
What to do: If your symptoms continue despite a negative result, speak to your GP. A negative result does not completely rule out H. pylori infection, and further testing may be recommended.
No line appears in the C (control) region. The test has not worked correctly, most likely due to insufficient sample volume or an error in technique.
What to do: Repeat the test using a new test cassette, following the instructions carefully. If the problem persists, do not continue using the kit and contact us for a replacement.
