The SELFCheck Menopause Test can identify whether you have transitioned to the menopause through a simple urine test.
The menopause is when oestrogen levels drop and the frequency of periods declines before ceasing entirely. The average age at which women reach menopause in the UK is 51, but it typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55.
Before a woman reaches the menopause, hormones in the body fluctuate, particularly follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone reaches a peak of 25 IU/L and remains elevated. It is this fluctuation in hormonal levels which causes the typical symptoms of the menopause, such as:
This test checks for an elevated level of FSH, which may indicate that you have entered menopause. However, you should conduct a second test a week later to confirm your initial results. For this reason, each test kit includes two tests.
The SELFCheck menopause test is quick and easy to use. Unlike a laboratory test, which requires you to send a sample to a lab for analysis and wait for results, the SELFCheck test kit can provide results in minutes after conducting the test at home.
You can buy a menopause test online from Prescription Doctor's UK-registered pharmacy. If you order before 3pm on weekdays, your items will be dispatched for next-day delivery.
Before performing the test, ensure you have all the necessary materials. You should always read the information in the supplied leaflet before performing the test. Failing to follow the instructions in the leaflet can cause inaccurate results.
1. Collect a urine sample in a clean, disposable plastic container. For optimal results, it is recommended to collect your urine sample first thing in the morning. You need to collect enough urine so that the urine is 2cm deep.
2. Open the foil pack, being careful not to touch the two white areas of the test strip.
When you open the foil pouch, you will see a desiccant (a small, white packet) that is used to keep the test strip dry. You should dispose of this packet carefully - place it in a bin out of sight and reach of children and pets. Do not discard the desiccant via water waste.
You may wish to keep the foil packaging to rest the used test strip on when waiting for your results.
Dip the "dipping zone" of the test strip into the urine sample for 3 seconds.
Do not allow the level of urine to go above the dipping zone.
3. Remove the test strip from the urine sample and place it horizontally on a flat surface with the coloured part facing up. You can rest the test strip on the foil packaging to avoid spilling urine on any other surfaces.
4. Wait for 10 minutes before reading the result. You can set a timer or reminder on your phone or smart home device to remind you to check your results.
When reading your results, ensure you are in a well-lit environment to view them clearly. Compare your results to the examples in the leaflet.
Positive result
2 purple lines will appear in the result field. The lower line should be the same shade or darker than the upper line. You should repeat this test exactly one week later to confirm that you have reached postmenopause.
Negative result
If the lower line is a lighter shade than the upper line, or if only one upper line appears, the result is negative. This may mean you have not yet reached the menopause. You do not need to use the second test strip.
Invalid result
If no purple lines appear in the result field, the test is invalid. This can happen due to an error in conducting the test, damage to the foil packaging or improper storage.
Once you have interpreted your result, you can discard your used test kit with your general household waste.
Pour your urine down the toilet and dispose of the container properly.
Do not flush the used test strip down the toilet.
If your first test result is positive, you should replicate the test exactly a week later. If both tests yield a positive result, you can assume that you have passed the transition period of menopause. In this instance, you should inform your doctor of the test result.
You may want to discuss treatments with your doctor, especially if your symptoms are causing you distress.
If your result is negative, you haven't reached the menopause yet. If you are experiencing symptoms, speak to your doctor.
