What is Ovex?

Ovex contains the active ingredient Mebendazole, which is an anthelmintics (antiparasitic) type of medicine used to treat parasitic infections.

This medication is licensed for the treatment of threadworm (pinworm) and can be taken in both tablet form and as an oral suspension for adults and children over the age of 2.

It is important that everyone in your household is treated for threadworm, including those without symptoms.

Ovex tablets are chewable and orange flavoured, making them easy to take for everyone in your household.

What is threadworm?

Threadworms are a type of parasitic infection which live in the intestines and around the anus. Although extremely common, threadworm can be rather unpleasant and can be easily spread if proper precautions aren’t taken.

These small parasitic worms can live in the body for anywhere up to 6 weeks before dying, however in that time female threadworms will lay eggs around the anus which often leads to excessive itchiness. Through scratching, threadworm can be easily spread to other parts of the body, other surfaces and other people making this parasitic infection hard to control if left untreated.

Although small numbers of threadworm can be symptomless, without treatment, parasitic infections can lead to other conditions, such as skin infections or vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina) in women.

How does Ovex work?

Mebendazole, the active ingredient of Ovex, inhibits the worms' ability to absorb sugar, which they need to survive

How long does Ovex take to work?

When treated with Ovex, threadworms will die and be eradicated from the body within 3 days.

How do I take Ovex?

Ovex is taken as a single dose and is 90-100% effective in killing threadworm. If symptoms persist, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Whilst just one dose of Ovex is enough to kill existing threadworm, it does not kill the eggs, and so ensuring that you maintain high levels of hygiene will help to prevent re-infection from occurring. This can be achieved by ensuring that all members of the household maintain high levels of self-hygiene (keeping hands clean at all times), as well as keeping the environment clean (through hoovering and dusting) to eradicate any existing threadworm eggs.

You can buy Ovex online today from Prescription Doctor for fast, efficient and discreet treatment of threadworm. If you have any questions about your medication, we advise to contact your doctor or pharmacist who will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

Clearing your home of threadworm eggs

While the medicine kills the worms inside the intestines, Mebendazole does not kill the eggs which may have been laid. For this reason, a strict cleaning regime should be implemented to prevent further infections.

You can prevent reinfection of threadworms by:

  • Bathing or showering first thing in the morning, to wash away any eggs which may have been laid around the anus during the night. (Showering is preferred to prevent contaminated bathwater.)
  • Avoid co-bathing to prevent the spread of threadworms
  • Discouraging scratching around the anus or vagina to prevent the spread of eggs under the fingernails.
  • Dusting surfaces with a damp cloth.
  • Ensuring you and your children wash your hands thoroughly after going to the toilet and before eating with hot, soapy water.
  • Hoovering bedrooms regularly to remove any eggs which may have been spread from shaking clothes and bedding.
  • Keeping fingernails short and deterring children from biting their fingernails or sucking their thumb.
  • Regularly washing fabrics which may have come into contact with eggs, such as bedding, pyjamas, underwear, flannels and towels.
  • Underwear should be changed daily and washed regularly to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Vigorously cleaning surfaces which may be infected with threadworm eggs, such as faucets, toilet seats, toys and kitchen worktops.
  • Wash family pets regularly to clear any eggs which may be carried in their fur.

If, after two weeks, you or your child continues to experience symptoms of threadworms, you should seek advice from your doctor.
