What is Avomine?

Avomine are antiemetic (anti-sickness) tablets that help to treat acute nausea and vomiting brought on by motion sickness.

How does it work?

Avomine contains Promethazine Teoclate, which blocks histamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (vomit centre) in the brain, to treat nausea and vomiting.

When the inner ear receives information that the body is in motion, it relays it to the brain which, in turn, sends signals to the visual receptors to determine if motion is perceived.

If these messages don't match - if the eyes can't see the motion that the inner ear is reporting and vice versa - the brain becomes confused and releases chemicals to induce vomiting.

Children over the age of 5 can take Avomine but it must not be taken for more than 7 days.

What are the symptoms of Travel Sickness?

Depending on a person's sensitivity to motion, symptoms can vary. Symptoms of travel sickness can include:

  • A feeling of uneasiness while travelling
  • Cold sweats
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Hyperventilation
  • Fatigue
  • Salivating excessively
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea and vomiting

How do you avoid Travel Sickness?

There are many ways to reduce your chances of suffering from motion sickness. These can include sitting in the front or middle seat of the car, focusing on the horizon, controlling your breathing and taking breaks when travelling for long periods of time.

If you know you suffer with travel sickness, avoid eating heavy meals before travelling. Try to abstain from reading, watching films or using your phone and tablet while in a moving vehicle as these can exacerbate symptoms.

How to take Avomine

For adults, swallow 1 tablet whole with water an hour or two before travelling. Avomine is effective for up to 24 hours.

Side effects

As with any medicine, there are risks that must be considered before taking Avomine. If you are concerned about any of these adverse effects, talk to one of our doctors before purchasing to mitigate your risk.

Always read the information leaflet that comes with the medication.

Common side effects of Avomine include:

  • Drowsiness (sedation)
  • Dryness of the mouth
  • Visual disturbances (Blurred vision or nyctalopia)
  • Difficulty urinating

Do not take Avomine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as it can pose a risk of developing breathing problems in newborns.

It is advised not to drive after taking Avomine for acute motion sickness as it can cause blurred vision, drowsiness and dizziness.

Consumption of alcohol while treating motion sickness with Avomine can cause side effects to worsen and reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
