What is Co-codamol 30/500mg Treatment?

About Co-codamol 30/500mg

Co-codamol 30/500mg treatment uses an opioid pain reliever combined with a non-prescription pain reliever to provide pain relief better than the relief provided by either medication alone.

Co-codamol 30/500mg tablets contain the painkillers paracetamol and codeine, which effectively relieve severe pain. Codeine is an opioid analgesic, which means the pain-relieving medications come from the opium poppy plant.

Co-codamol 30/500mg tablets provides short-term relief of moderate pain not relieved by other painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alone. Treatment with Co-codamol 30/500mg alleviates your pain so you can carry on with your day.

What are the active ingredients?

  • Paracetamol – 500 mg
  • Codeine – 30 mg

How Does Co-Codomal Treatment Work?

Codeine in Co-codamol

The codeine in Co-Codomal interacts with the central nervous system (CNS) to change the way the brain perceives pain. Codeine works by mimicking the action of pain-reducing chemicals, known as endorphins, which occur naturally in the brain and spinal cord.

The human body converts codeine into morphine, another type of narcotic from the opium poppy plant. Once converted, the morphine molecules latch onto opioid receptors in the CNS, somewhat like tying up a boat at a slip. When codeine docks at the receptor and attaches, it causes the receptor to send a pain-reducing message to the brain.

Paracetamol in Co-codamol

Paracetamol works in the central nervous system to relieve mild to moderate pain in a different way. This medicine inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are naturally occurring chemicals that produce pain and inflammation at the site of injury or disease.

Together, codeine and paracetamol work better to provide pain relief than either medicine could provide alone.

All oral pain pills, including Co-Codamol, must start dissolving in the stomach before they begin to relieve pain. Patients typically experience relief in 30 to 45 minutes after swallowing an oral pain reliever. Because they dissolve slowly in the stomach, Co-Codamol provides relief from pain for 4 to 6 hours.

What are the Uses, Dosage, Side Effects & Warnings?

Uses

Co-codamol is commonly used to treat severe pain. Prescribers will calculate the correct dosage for each patient, depending on the severity of pain, source of pain, and the patient’s personal health history. Prescribers will not prescribe Co-codamol and offer alternative treatment options if our prescribers feel Co-codamol is inappropriate.

Doses

One to two tablets every four to six hours when necessary to a maximum of eight tablets per 24 hours

Missed doses / Overdoses

Since you take Co-codamol as needed, missed doses do not pose a problem.

If you take more Co-codamol than you should, consult with a physician immediately even if you feel well, as high paracetamol levels can cause delayed but serious liver damage. The risk of paracetamol overdose is greater in people with alcoholic liver disease. If you go to hospital, be sure to take any remaining tablets with you.
