Duraphat 5000 is a concentrated form of toothpaste containing a higher level of fluoride than ordinary toothpaste. The fluoride helps to reduce tooth decay and promotes healthy teeth and gums. It is used by adults and children over 16 years old at risk of tooth decay.
Tooth decay is also known as dental caries and occurs when dental plaque turns sugars into acid, causing damage to the tooth. If plaque starts to build up, it can lead to other problems, such as holes in the teeth (cavities) and gum disease.
Tooth decay can happen at any age due to poor diet or dental hygiene. As well as tooth decay, poor oral hygiene can lead to other issues, such as discolouration of the teeth and physical pain from toothache.
Brushing your teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste is one of the most effective ways of preventing tooth decay.
For people at a higher risk of tooth decay, their dentist may prescribe stronger toothpaste such as Duraphat 2500 or Duraphat 5000.
Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste is formulated with 5,000 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride, which protects your teeth from cavities by reinforcing the enamel on your teeth. Fluoride binds to the minerals in the saliva and starts to remineralize the tooth surfaces, making them more resistant to decay.
This helps protect the teeth from sugar acids and bacteria. When brushing with Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste, it also helps remove plaque on the tooth surfaces.
Once you start using Duraphat 5000, it will help prevent the spread of tooth decay by rebuilding the tooth's enamel.
It is essential to visit your dentist regularly so early tooth decay can be detected and treated as soon as possible.
You should use Duraphat 5000 toothpaste as your dentist or doctor has prescribed. If you are unsure how to use this product, ask your dentist or doctor.
You should use Colgate Duraphat 5000 instead of your regular toothpaste and brush your teeth after every meal.
You can use a manual or electric toothbrush when using Duraphat 5000.
Gently squeeze a 2 cm ribbon onto your toothbrush, which provides between 3 mg and 5 mg of fluoride.
Brush your teeth evenly in a vertical motion, from the gum to the tip of the tooth, for approximately 3 minutes. Make sure to spit out excess foam.
Do not swallow the foam or the toothpaste.
Once you have used the toothpaste, replace the cap and store the toothpaste away from children.
Before using Duraphat 5000, it's essential to read the leaflet supplied with your medicine. This leaflet provides instructions on using and storing the treatment and vital safety information such as contraindications and side effects.
If you have concerns about anything you read in the supplied leaflet, speak to your doctor, dentist or pharmacist for advice.
Duraphat 5000 is generally well-tolerated and unlikely to cause side effects.

If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or dentist before using Duraphat 5000 toothpaste.
Please inform our prescriber of all medicines you are currently taking, including those prescribed by your doctor or bought over the counter and health and herbal supplements.
Do not use Duraphat 5000 toothpaste past the expiry printed on the packaging. The date refers to the last day of the specified month.
Never throw away medicine via household or water waste. Take any unwanted or expired medication to your pharmacy and ask them to dispose of it safely.
Always store Duraphat 5000 toothpaste out of sight and reach from children and pets.
Never share your medicine with anybody else, even if they are experiencing the same symptoms or have the same condition.
Colgate Duraphat 5000 is avaiable from Superdrug pharmacy.
Yes, you can drink alcohol while using Duraphat 5000 toothpaste. However, avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
Duraphat 5000 should not impact your ability to drive or operate any machinery.
You should avoid rinsing your mouth with water or mouthwash after using Duraphat 5000, as this may reduce the effectiveness of the fluoride.
You should avoid sugary foods and drinks to prevent tooth decay, and avoid eating or drinking anything for up to 30 minutes after brushing your teeth with Duraphat 5000.
In clinical studies, Duraphat 5000 reduced caries by more than 75%.
One tube of Duraphat should last approximately one month.
If you forget to use Duraphat 5000 when you should, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use Duraphat at the next usual time.
Do not use more Duraphat to make up for the missed dose.
If you use more Duraphat than you should over a long period, you may develop staining of the teeth, known as dental fluorosis.
Colgate Duraphat 2800 / 5000 is unavailable to buy over the counter from Tesco because it is a prescription-only medication.
