Duraphat 5000 is a concentrated form of toothpaste containing a higher level of fluoride than ordinary toothpaste. It is used by adults and children over 16-years-old who are at risk of tooth decay.
Tooth decay is also known as dental caries and occurs when dental plaque turns sugars into acid, causing damage to the tooth. If plaque starts to build up, it can lead to other problems too, such as holes in the teeth (cavities) and gum disease.
Tooth decay can happen at any age due to poor diet, or poor dental hygiene. As well as tooth decay, poor oral hygiene can also lead to other issues, such as discolouration of the teeth, and physical pain from toothache.
Thoroughly brushing your teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste is one of the most effective ways of preventing tooth decay.
For people at a higher risk of tooth decay, their dentist may prescribe stronger toothpaste such as Duraphat 2500 or Duraphat 5000.
To learn more about tooth decay, visit the NHS website.
Duraphat 5000 toothpaste contains the active ingredient sodium fluoride, which helps to prevent discolouration of teeth and tooth decay.
When you eat sugar, the bacteria in plaque create an acid. This acid damages the protective enamel of teeth, contributing to tooth decay. Tooth decay can lead to toothache and make eating difficult.
Sodium fluoride helps to protect teeth by strengthening the enamel, making teeth more resistant to the acids from plaque that can lead to tooth decay. Fluoride also prevents mineral loss in teeth and replenishes the number of minerals our teeth need to protect against plaque.
Once you start using Duraphat 5000, it will help prevent the spread of tooth decay by rebuilding the tooth’s enamel.
It is important to visit your dentist regularly so early tooth decay can be detected and treated as soon as possible.
You can find a dentist near you by visiting the NHS and entering your postcode.
You should use Duraphat 5000 toothpaste as your dentist or doctor has prescribed. If you are unsure about how to use this product, ask your dentist or doctor.
You should use Duraphat 5000 toothpaste instead of your regular toothpaste and brush your teeth with it after every meal.
You can use a manual or electric toothbrush when using Duraphat 5000.
Gently squeeze out a 2 cm ribbon onto your toothbrush, which provides between 3 mg and 5 mg of fluoride.
Brush your teeth evenly in a vertical motion, from the gum to the tip of the tooth for approximately 3 minutes. Make sure to spit out excess foam.
Do not swallow the foam or the toothpaste.
Once you have used the toothpaste, replace the cap and store the toothpaste away from children.
Before using Duraphat 5000, it's important to read the leaflet supplied with your medicine. This leaflet provides instructions on how to use and store the medicine, as well as important safety information such as contraindications and side effects.

If you forget to use Duraphat 5000 when you should, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use Duraphat at the next usual time.
Do not use more Duraphat than you normally would to make up for the missed dose.
If you use more Duraphat than you should over a long period, you may develop staining of the teeth known as dental fluorosis.
