Modafinil, often sold under the brand name Provigil, is a drug used in the treatment of narcolepsy and other excessive sleepiness disorders such as shift work sleep disorder and
Idiopathic hypersomnia. It also helps manage the daytime sleepiness that comes with obstructive sleep apnoea.
"Narcolepsy is a potentially dangerous condition to have. At any given moment, a person with narcolepsy can suffer a 'sleep attack' in which they could lose all control of their body - this could happen behind the wheel of a moving vehicle or while crossing a busy road. Modafinil aims to reduce the chance of this happening by keeping the body alert and awake." Mohamed Imran Lakhi, Superintendent Pharmacist.
Modafinil is classified as a wakefulness-promoting drug. As the name suggests, the goal is to promote wakefulness or alertness to reduce the effects of the sleep attacks and daytime sleepiness.
Modafinil most likely acts as a selective dopamine reuptake inhibitor, although the exact action is unclear. By blocking the absorption of the chemical dopamine, it stimulates the central nervous system and, specifically, the brain to promote wakefulness and better motor control.
It’s important to inform our prescriber about any allergies you might have and, especially if you have had a reaction to similar drugs like Modafinil. You also need to be open about any heart problems or if you are diagnosed with heart valve conditions like aortic valve stenosis, mitral valve stenosis or a valve prolapse.
Let our prescriber know what other medications you take before you buy Modafinil online in the UK, as well. This would include natural herbal products or vitamins.
Keep in mind that Modafinil is not a cure for narcolepsy or sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnoea. It is only prescribed to manage daytime sleepiness.
Modafinil can be habit-forming with long-term use. There may be withdrawal effects if you stop using the drug suddenly.
Tell our prescriber if you are:
Modafinil online is only suitable for adults and there may be risks to an unborn baby or breastfeeding infant.
Narcolepsy is a diverse illness, so not everyone experiences it exactly the same way. It is a chronic condition and symptoms may occur daily or just occasionally. The symptoms can change over time, as well.
Narcolepsy can affect men and women at any age. However, it is more common between the ages of 10 to 25. Initial diagnosis of Narcolepsy proves to be difficult as symptoms manifest over time. It is estimated that 80% remain undiagnosed and untreated due to the difference in symptom manifestation. The symptoms of narcolepsy include:
All these symptoms occur during a sleep attack. Sleep attacks often happen when you are in the middle of doing something like playing a video game or writing. When you wake, you may not remember doing this task. People with narcolepsy can experience a sudden loss of muscle strength during sleep attacks and be unable to move.
People with narcolepsy may also suffer from other sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnoea and may attempt to act out their dreams as they sleep by flailing their arms or try to walk while in bed.
The use of Modafinil may interfere with the effectiveness of hormone-based birth control. You should use another form of birth control when taking this medication such as condoms. Keep using condoms for at least one month after you stop taking modafinil.
The recommended dosage is dependent on the severity of the diagnosis and severity of symptoms.
The initial dosage can be 100 mg once or twice a day. Your Doctor will be able to provide a safe and effective dosage regimen which provides maximum relief of symptoms with the lowest risk of adverse effects. Therefore, it is imperative you follow your Doctor’s advice and inform them if your current regimen does not provide sufficient relief.
Modafinil is generally well tolerated by most people but there are some side effects.
If you experience any side effects, whether listed above or in the patient information leaflet enclosed with your medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
You can reduce the risk of side effects by taking the drug exactly as prescribed and by notifying our prescriber about any other medications you take including over-the-counter products. Make sure to drink plenty of water when taking this drug to lower the risk of skin and mouth dryness.
Since Modafinil acts as a stimulant, it is best to avoid drinking alcohol and to limit your caffeine intake. Drinking coffee or caffeinated tea might make you feel shaky and cause your heart to beat too fast.
It can vary for different people. Most claim to feel the effect of the drug within an hour.
