Understanding Provera (Medroxyprogesterone)

Provera is a medication containing medroxyprogesterone that is used to treat menstrual disorders and delay periods. They work by altering hormone levels in the body.

You can request treatment for period delay via our online pharmacy service. To check your eligibility, please proceed to the consultation.

How Does Provera Work to Delay Periods?

Normally, your menstrual cycle is controlled by the rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone levels. Estrogen dominates the first half of your cycle, peaking around ovulation. After ovulation, progesterone takes over to maintain the uterine lining. If pregnancy doesn't occur, progesterone levels drop, triggering your period as the lining sheds.

Provera contains medroxyprogesterone, a synthetic form of progesterone. By supplying your body with a steady level of artificial progesterone, Provera essentially delays your period by maintaining the uterine lining. The uterine lining is maintained, delaying your period until you stop taking the tablets.

How Much Provera Do I Need to Take to Stop My Period?

To postpone your period with Provera:

  • Begin taking the tablets 2-3 days before your period is due
  • Take one 10mg tablet three times a day at regular intervals
  • Continue the tablets for the duration recommended by your doctor (typically up to 10-14 days)
  • When you're ready for your period to begin, simply stop taking Provera

It usually takes a few days (usually 3 to 7 days) after stopping the tablets for your period to resume as hormone levels rebalance. Your cycle should then return to normal the following month.

How Can I Get Provera?

Provera is a prescription-only medication. Fortunately, at Prescription Doctor, we make accessing the medicines you need simple and discreet.

We offer a quick and easy online consultation service. Just complete a short health questionnaire, and our qualified doctors will assess whether Provera is right for you. If approved, we'll ship your Provera tablets in plain packaging straight to your door as soon as the next working day. No GP appointments or pharmacy trips are required.

Is Provera Right For Me?

Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) may be suitable for delaying periods, but it's not appropriate for everyone. You shouldn't take Provera if:

  • You're pregnant or think you might be pregnant
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You have liver disease
  • You have a history of breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers
  • You have a history of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack

Provera requires careful consideration if you have:

  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma
  • Epilepsy
  • Migraine headaches

Regarding allergies: you shouldn’t take Provera if you're allergic to medroxyprogesterone or any other ingredients in Provera. Allergic reactions can be serious, including rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

What Side Effects Can Provera Cause?

Provera is generally well-tolerated, especially when used for short-term period delay. However, some users may experience side effects. The most common side effect is irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting. This can range from light spotting to heavier, unpredictable bleeding. While this can be inconvenient, it's usually not a cause for concern.

Some women report mild nausea when taking Provera. This often improves if the medication is taken with food. Headaches are also possible but are typically mild and short-lived. Mood changes are another possible effect. Some users notice increased irritability or mood swings. In rare cases, more severe mood changes like depression may occur. Weight fluctuations are sometimes reported, though it's unclear if this is a direct effect of the medication.

A Safer Choice for Women at Risk of Blood Clots

If you're looking to delay your period but have concerns about blood clot risks, Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) might be the right option for you. Research shows that Provera is considered a safer alternative because it doesn't convert into ethinyl estradiol in your body. So, unlike some other medications used for period delay, Provera is recommended for women who have a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). This includes:

  • Women who are overweight
  • Smokers
  • Those aged over 35
  • Anyone with other known risk factors for blood clots

Warning: Provera is Not a Contraceptive

Provera is not a contraceptive in its own right – you can still conceive while taking it. Make sure to use condoms or your usual birth control method if you want to avoid pregnancy. Provera isn't designed to avoid pregnancy, only to postpone periods.

Order Provera Safely and Conveniently

Does norethisterone reset your cycle

It can be challenging to predict when your period will arrive each month, but this task becomes even more difficult when you have a special event, such as a holiday or a wedding. Fortunately, a few options are available to help you delay your period in the UK.The first option is to take a medication called Norethisterone. Our clinician can prescribe this after a consultation. Norethisterone helps to delay your period by up to 17 days. It works by stopping the natural shedding of the womb lining and, therefore, delaying your period. It is essential to note that Norethisterone should not be taken for more than 17 days without your doctor's prior approval. It is also worth noting that taking Norethisterone does not always guarantee that your period will be delayed – it is simply a form of contraception. It can delay your period, but it should not be used if you want to prevent pregnancy. The second option is to use a menstrual cup. This type of cup is inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual fluid. It is then emptied and rinsed out every 8 to 12 hours, and it can be used to delay your period. This can be a helpful way to delay your period if you only have a short time{add_product_block(30)}How does Norethisterone work?Norethisterone is a derivative of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone and prevents the body from ovulating. It works by increasing the production of a hormone called progesterone, which stops the release of an egg from the ovaries. This blocks the eggs from being fertilised and, therefore, prevents pregnancy.Norethisterone can also delay the start of a period for up to 17 days. This is because the hormone suppresses the production of the body’s natural hormone, oestrogen, which is required for the menstrual cycle to start. Norethisterone can also be used to treat heavy and painful periods and irregular menstrual cycles. How to take Norethisterone?Take norethisterone exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Do not take larger or smaller doses or take them longer than your doctor recommended.Do not stop taking norethisterone suddenly unless advised by your doctor.Keep all scheduled follow-up appointments with your doctor.Avoid alcohol, other drugs, or supplements that can increase your risk of bleeding or other serious side effects.Stay active and maintain a healthy diet to reduce the risk of side effects and complications from long-term use of norethisterone.Talk to your doctor before taking any other medication while taking norethisterone.Store norethisterone at room temperature, away from light and moisture. What happens if you take norethisterone too late?If you take norethisterone too late, it may not effectively postpone your period. Take it as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist to ensure it works effectively.Does norethisterone reset your cycle? No, norethisterone does not reset your menstrual cycle. It is possible for your next period to be delayed after taking norethisterone, however this is not always the case. Your doctor will be able to advise you on any potential changes to your menstrual cycle.Norethisterone is a hormonal medication and works as a progesterone-like agent to delay your period. It works by stopping the natural hormones which cause the lining of your womb to shed, meaning that your period will be delayed.Additional ResourcesPrimolut N 5mgProvera (Medroxyprogesterone)Utovlan TabletsWhat Happens If You Take Norethisterone on the First Day of Your Period?Pills to Stop Menstruation Immediately

Pills to Stop Menstruation Immediately

Period delay pills are an effective way to temporarily delay your period. They contain medications that mimic the effects of the hormone progesterone and stop the uterine lining from breaking down. If you start taking them 3 days before your period is due, you won’t bleed until you stop taking the pills. However, you can’t take period delay pills indefinitely. What Are Period Delay Pills?Period delay pills are medications you can use to delay your period. They can be a lifesaver when you don’t want to deal with your period during an important event, and many people use them ahead of:WeddingsHolidaysDates or romantic tripsSporting eventsOther important eventsPeriod delay pills can also be used to manage certain medical conditions, such as:Heavy periodsPainful periodsIrregular periodsPremenstrual tension (PMT)EndometriosisBreast cancerHow Do Period Delay Pills Work? Two hormones control the events of a typical menstrual cycle: oestrogen and progesterone. During the first half of the menstrual cycle (the follicular phase), high levels of oestrogen cause the uterine lining to thicken. Another hormone, called progesterone, maintains the uterine lining during the second half of the menstrual cycle (the luteal phase).Together, oestrogen and progesterone prepare the uterus for pregnancy. If you don’t get pregnant, oestrogen and progesterone levels drop dramatically. This triggers the uterine lining to break down, which causes bleeding (i.e., a period).Period delay pills contain progestogens, which are molecules with similar effects to progesterone. If you take them a few days before your period is due, they artificially maintain your progesterone levels instead of allowing them to fall. This stops your body from initiating the breakdown of your womb lining and allows you to delay your period.Types of Period Delay PillsThere are two types of progestogens used in period delay pills: norethisterone and medroxyprogesterone. Both types mimic the effects of progesterone, stopping the womb lining from breaking down and preventing menstrual bleeding.Examples of norethisterone-containing period delay pills include:Norethisterone (5mg)Primolut NUtovlanProvera is a brand name for medroxyprogesterone period delay pills.Contraceptive Pills vs. Period Delay PillsMany people use contraceptive pills, like Rigevidon, to delay their periods. If you take these pills without a break, you can avoid having a period for as long as you like. However, not everyone can use contraceptive pills. They may be unsuitable for people with certain medical conditions, such as:Blood clotsMigrainesNarrowed or blocked arteriesHeart problemsBreast cancerGallbladder problemsLiver cancerSevere cirrhosis of the liverComplications due to diabetesOthers may want to avoid using contraceptive pills because of their side effects, which may include:HeadachesNauseaBreast tendernessIncreased blood pressureChanges in moodIf you want to postpone your period but can’t or don’t want to take contraceptive pills, period delay pills may be a suitable alternative. If you have any questions or concerns regarding contraceptive pills or period delay pills, it’s always best to speak with your doctor before starting a new medication. When To Take a Period Delay PillIf you want to delay your period with norethisterone, you should take a 5mg dose 3 times a day, starting 3 days before your period is due. Your period should occur within 2-3 days of stopping the medication.Pills containing medroxyprogesterone (such as Provera) should be taken at a dose of 10mg, three times a day. You should start taking the pills 3 days before your period is due, and your period will start around 3 days after stopping. How Long Can You Delay Your Period? The practice of delaying or preventing periods is called menstrual suppression, and it is widely considered safe by medical professionals. You can delay your period indefinitely using a combined contraceptive pill, though many people using this method still experience breakthrough bleeding (i.e., bleeding between periods).Period delay pills are more suitable for temporarily delaying periods. For example, norethisterone can be used to postpone your period for up to 4 weeks. However, they are less effective for long-term menstrual suppression than contraceptive pills. Norethisterone needs to be taken regularly, usually three times a day, to effectively delay menstruation.Norethisterone may also cause side effects such as bloating, irregular bleeding, breast tenderness, and headaches. It’s important to note that norethisterone and medroxyprogesterone period delay pills don’t work as contraceptives and won’t prevent pregnancy. Are Period Delay Pills Safe To Use?For most people, period delay pills are safe to use. However, they may not be suitable for everyone. For example, norethisterone medications are not recommended for people with certain health conditions, such as:EpilepsyMigrainesAsthmaHeart problemsKidney problemsConditions that increase the risk of blood clotsMedroxyprogesterone medications (like Provera) may not be suitable for people with:EpilepsyMigrainesAsthmaHeart problemsKidney problemsLiver problemsHearing problemsDiabetesDepressionHigh blood pressureGallstonesLupusRisk of blood clotsLike all medications, period delay pills may cause side effects.
