What is Pulmicort Turbohaler?

The Pulmicort Turbohaler is a preventer inhaler which contains budesonide in a dry powdered form. You should take your preventer inhaler daily.

The medicine is available in 100mcg, 200mcg and 400mcg dosages. Depending on your medical history and the severity of your symptoms, your doctor will prescribe the most appropriate dosage for you.

It is only available on prescription and can only be prescribed if you have been previously diagnosed with asthma.

How does it work?

Pulmicort Turbohalers are intended to treat inflammation of the bronchi (airways) brought on by asthma. The inflammation is caused by an autoimmune response to triggers such as:

  • Pollen
  • Dust
  • Animal dander
  • Chest infections
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Exercise
  • Physical pain
  • Strong emotions (laughing and crying)
  • Weather (temperature and humidity)
  • Chemicals
  • Pollution

When one of these triggers affects the body, often through inhalation, histamines, leukotrienes, and cytokines are released, which cause inflammation in the muscles surrounding the airways and increase the amount of mucus produced within the body.

Pulmicort's active ingredient, budesonide, is a corticosteroid which prevents inflammation and mucus secretion. Subsequently, the airways remain open and clear, making it easier to breathe.

How to use Pulmicort Turbohaler?

The Turbohaler device is easy to use.

Before using your inhaler, check the number of remaining doses left.

Priming your Turbohaler

Before using your Turbohaler for the first time, you need to prime it.

To prime your Turbohaler, hold the inhaler upright with the mouthpiece pointing upwards.

Carefully remove the cap.

Turn the coloured base as far as it will go in one direction and then as far as it will go in the other direction. If done correctly, you should hear a click. It does not matter which direction you turn the base first.

Your Turbohaler is now ready to use.
