How to Take Mounjaro on Holiday: Travelling Checklist

While taking Mounjaro on holiday with you is possible, preparation is key. To help, we’ve put together a comprehensive checklist of everything you need to consider when travelling with your weight loss medication. Here are our top tips:

Get a Carry-On Bag

If your trip involves flying or other methods of public transport, invest in a carry-on bag to store your medication. It’s not ideal to put Mounjaro weight loss pens in your checked luggage because it will undergo temperature and pressure changes that can impact the effectiveness or damage the active ingredient.

Store the Mounjaro pen in a clear, plastic bag, like a sandwich bag, so that you can easily remove it from your hand luggage as you pass through security.

Take an Ice Pack

If your Mounjaro pen is going to be subjected to temperature changes on your travels, or you don’t have access to a fridge when you reach your destination, we suggest travelling with an ice pack or cool bag. You can place these inside your hand luggage with ease and they will ensure your medication remains at the correct temperature.

Request a Fridge

Try to request a fridge at your accommodation. Mounjaro must either be stored at temperatures between 2°C and 8°C, or kept below  30°C for up to 30 days. If not, the solution may degrade and lose its potency — making it much less effective for weight loss.

Should you be unable to get your hands on a refrigerator and are going to be travelling with Mounjaro for over 30 days, you should speak to your clinician for further advice.

Order Enough Mounjaro Pens for Your Trip

It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of a long-anticipated trip, but it is important that you order enough Mounjaro medication, at the correct dosage, for the duration of your holiday.

If you are due to increase your dose while you are away, make sure you have enough of the higher strength to accommodate your trip. Your clinician can advise further on this where necessary.

Don’t Forget to Pack Your Needles

Make sure you pack enough needles for each weekly injection while you are away, plus a few spares in case they get damaged, bent, or become unsealed. You can store the needles with your Mounjaro pens for safe-keeping.

3 Top Tips for Flying with Mounjaro

Travelling abroad can be tricky with medication, but with a little extra preparation, it needn’t be. It is possible to take your weight loss treatment on a flight as long as you are well prepared. Here are our top three tips for flying with Mounjaro:

#1: Storing Mounjaro on the Plane

Mounjaro must be kept cool while travelling. Although most planes are climate controlled, it’s still important to keep your medication in an insulated cool bag, maybe with an ice pack, to keep it at the correct temperature.

The cool bag can conveniently be kept in your hand luggage. Alternatively, contact your airline in advance of your flight to find out how they may be able to assist you. It may even be possible for you to store your medication in the aircraft’s fridge.

#2: Check Local Regulations

Before you travel, it’s crucial to check the regulations around bringing medication like Mounjaro into the country you are visiting. Some countries have strict laws around importing prescription medications,  so you need to be aware of any potential difficulties. Always research your destination’s rules and, if in any doubt, contact the embassy for the most accurate information.

#3: Obtain a Doctor’s Note

Some countries will require a doctor’s note when travelling with Mounjaro. The note will need to specify why you’re taking the medication, the dosage you need, and how long you will be using it. This can help avoid confusion at airport security or customs. If you can, you should try to get the note translated into the language of the country you are visiting for ease.

How Do You Store Mounjaro on Holiday?

Safe storage of your medication is one of the most important aspects of travelling with Mounjaro. Not only should your pens ideally be stored in a refrigerator, but they also need to stay out of direct sunlight and avoid hard fluctuations in temperature. Doing all this maintains the treatment’s effectiveness and keeps you safe.

If you’re unable to put your Mounjaro pens in a fridge, avoid keeping them in the bathroom or kitchen. Even though these may seem like sensible places, you run the risk of exposing the medication to excess moisture in the air and the aforementioned temperature fluctuations. Instead, try to keep it in a cupboard in your cool bag.

Taking Mounjaro on Holiday: How to Keep on Track

Just because you’re going on holiday, doesn’t mean your weight loss journey needs to be stopped or paused. A key component of how to travel with Mounjaro is maintaining your regular dosage schedule, even when there are likely to be changes in your routine. Consistency is crucial to achieving success.

Here are a few tips for taking Mounjaro on holiday and keeping on top of your weight loss plan:

When to Take Mounjaro

When you are travelling you will need to continue taking Mounjaro once a week, on the same day and at the same time. This may be more challenging while you are away, but setting a reminder on your phone or using a diary can help you stay on track and avoid missing a dose.

If you’re visiting a region in a different time zone, make sure you set an alarm that corresponds to your usual injection time back home (if possible). For example, if you usually take Mounjaro at 3pm and are on holiday somewhere that’s three hours behind, try to administer the medication at noon. Keeping this level of consistency can help you maintain your weight loss progress and reduce the potential impact of side effects.

What Happens if I Forget a Dose?

If you forget to inject Mounjaro while you are away, here is what you should do:

  • If it has been 4 days or less since you should have taken your dose, inject it as soon as you remember, then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day.
  • If it has been more than 4 days since you should have used Mounjaro, skip the missed dose, do not take a double dose. Then, inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day.

What if My Dose Changes While I’m Away?

It is possible that your trip may coincide with a Mounjaro dose change, and that’s nothing to worry about. If you are going to be titrating up to the next pen, you must plan ahead before you travel. Ensure you have enough medication at both your current and increased strength to last for the duration of your holiday. It’s also a good idea to familiarise yourself with the potential side effects and how long they last in case you experience them when your dosage increases.

If you’re not sure about changing your Mounjaro dose mid-trip, it’s a good idea to speak to your clinician for further advice.

How to Maintain Weight Loss on Holiday

Holidays can be a challenge for maintaining weight loss goals because there are so many distractions. Although everyone wants to have fun while they are away, it is important to maintain your progress. Some of the things you can do to keep you on track include:

  • Meal planning before you travel if possible to help you make healthier choices while you are away – use our 7-day diet plan for weight loss for guidance
  • Practising portion control using smaller plates and being mindful of your servings, particularly if your accommodation provides a buffet
  • Staying hydrated by sipping clear fluids throughout the day
  • Packing healthy snacks for days out or experiment with new fruits and vegetables
  • Incorporating exercise into your trip by taking advantage of pool access, walking to local attractions, or exploring the local area on foot
  • Allowing occasional treats, but practising moderation
  • Avoiding skipping meals which can lead to overeating later
