Nevolat Dosage Guide for Weight Loss

When it comes to weight loss, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. While treatments like Mounjaro and Wegovy have repeatedly grabbed the headlines, Nevolat is also a worthy consideration for many reasons.

Containing the active ingredient liraglutide, Nevolat is known as the generic version of Saxenda, meaning it’s available as a non-branded product. This is similar to the relationship between Xenical and orlistat, which act as branded and non-branded treatments respectively. So, if Saxenda worked for you, so will Nevolat.

One of the main differences between Nevolat and its rival weight loss injections is its dosage schedule. While Mounjaro and Wegovy are administered on a weekly basis, Nevolat is taken once per day. This could make it a more cost-effective and gradual solution.

But how exactly does the Nevolat dosage schedule work, and what is the most effective strength for weight loss? Read on to find out.

How Does Nevolat Help With Weight Loss?

Nevolat’s active ingredient, liraglutide, mimics the digestive hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which supports weight loss by regulating your appetite, promoting feelings of fullness, and delaying gastric emptying. In turn, this reduces your food intake, makes it easier to follow a diet plan, and minimises cravings, giving your body the chance to shed the pounds in a safe and effective way.

Nevolat works in a similar fashion to Wegovy, in that it’s primarily a GLP-1 receptor agonist, though the latter is typically available in higher doses. Mounjaro is known as a dual agonist, targeting both GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors — usually producing better results than its competitors.

Because everyone’s weight loss journey is different, you may find that Nevolat is more tolerable and beneficial for you, even if it may statistically yield weaker results.

What is the Starting Dose of Nevolat?

The starting dose of Nevolat is 0.6 mg per day, which is increased weekly until you reach the maximum maintenance dose. Everyone will begin treatment at this strength regardless of whether this is your first time using it or you are changing from an alternative weight loss medication. Beginning on a low potency helps your body adjust to liraglutide.

Why Should You Increase the Nevolat Dosage Slowly?

It is important to gradually increase (titrate) the Nevolat dosage, to give your body the opportunity to acclimatise to the new medication. Like all drugs, Nevolat can cause a range of potential side effects. So, slowly upping the strength will help you to safely reach the highest dose and increase the chance of continuing treatment.

Some of the common Nevolat side effects include:

What is the Nevolat Maintenance Dose?

The Nevolat maintenance dose is 3 mg per day, but this is only a recommendation. So, if you find that you experience sufficient appetite regulation and are losing weight on a lower potency, it may be possible to stick to it.

The right strength for you will depend on several factors, including your body’s response and any side effects you get. If you settle on a lower maintenance dose but find your weight is plateauing, you may be able to titrate up under the guidance of your clinician.

The Nevolat Dosage Schedule

Unlike other weight loss injections, Nevolat is self-administered daily, starting at 0.6 mg every day for a week. This is then gradually increased by 0.6 mg each week, allowing your body to adapt to the treatment, until you reach the maximum 3.0 mg/day dose.

If you follow the Nevolat dosage schedule exactly, it will take you 5 weeks to reach the strongest potency, as shown here:

If you experience any side effects as you titrate Nevolat, you should remain on your current dose until they have settled. If you find them too difficult to manage, speak to your clinician who may advise an alternative medication

How Often Do You Take Nevolat?

Nevolat is given via a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection every day. It can be injected at any time, but it’s best to have a schedule that works for you to ensure consistency. Injecting at the same time each day means you’re getting the right amount of medication that's required for effective weight loss and for reducing the impact of side effects.

How Many Nevolat Pens Will I Need?

The number of Nevolat pens you’ll need depends on how long it takes for you to reach your weight loss goals. If you follow the Nevolat dosage schedule, you will need 3 pens for the first 5 weeks of treatment, titrating you to the maximum maintenance dose.

Once you have reached the maximum daily strength, you will need approximately 5 pens per month to maintain your treatments. You may need a different number of pens in total because your journey with Nevolat will be unique to you, so it is important to be mindful of this.

What is the Most Effective Nevolat Dose?

Research shows that the most effective Nevolat dosage for weight loss is 3 mg/day, however, the lower strengths may still have benefits. The SCALE Obesity and Pre-Diabetes trial demonstrated that after 56 weeks, the average weight loss on the highest dose of liraglutide was 8%.

In total, 63% of people given liraglutide lost at least 5% of their starting body weight compared to 21.7% given a placebo, while 33% lost at least 10% of their starting weight.

A later trial investigating the effects of daily 3 mg liraglutide injections on obese people with severe obstructive sleep apnoea, one of the underlying medical conditions that can be included in the eligibility criteria found that:

  • the average weight loss was 5.7% over 32 weeks
  • liraglutide significantly improve sleep apnoea outcomes
  • improvements in HbA1c and blood pressure were noted in the liraglutide group compared to placebo

Wegovy vs Mounaro vs Nevolat Dosage Comparison

Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Nevolat are some of the most popular weight loss medications available in the UK, but there are some distinct differences. The most obvious of which is that Mounjaro and Wegovy are injected weekly, while Nevolat requires a daily commitment. Each also contains a different active ingredient that requires different dosages to be effective which are shown in the table below:

If you miss a dose of Nevolat, it is important to know what to do next and will depend on how long it has been since you should have had your injection. If less than 12 hours have passed since your missed dose, you should inject it as soon as you remember and carry on the next day as normal.
