How To Take Wegovy Tablets

For some time, the effective rates of weight loss that Wegovy injections boasted were unavailable to those who have a fear or dislike of needles. Other oral weight-loss treatments simply could not measure up to the effectiveness of injections - this is, until June 2026, when the Wegovy tablet was approved by the MHRA. As the first GLP-1 tablet prescribed for weight loss, many switched from other treatments in favour of the tablet's ease of administration.

GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1, and is the name of the hormone Wegovy mimics within the body to help you lose weight. Both forms of Wegovy work this way, giving them similar effectiveness rates.

However, while the tablets are effective, they will only work if you administer them correctly, as they have strict administration rules you must follow. This is where Prescription Doctor comes in. This guide on how to take Wegovy tablets covers everything you may need to know: what to take them with, how to prepare them, and when you may or may not be eligible to take them.

How to Take the Wegovy Tablet

Taking the Wegovy tablet is simple, but you must take it correctly for the medication to work. It should be taken once a day, swallowed whole with water. It’s better to start treatment with this knowledge on hand than to learn as you go, so Wegovy can start having positive effects as soon as possible.

How Much Water Should I Take With Wegovy Pills?

Take a maximum of 120ml with the Wegovy pill; more may affect the medicine's absorption into your system. At first, you may need to measure out 120ml every time, but as you progress through the treatment, you will get a better idea of how much water that looks like/how far up your glass it usually fills.

Do not crush, chew, or split the pill, as this may reduce the effectiveness.

Can I Drink Anything Other than Plain Water?

You must only take Wegovy pills with still water. Any other administration assistance risks the treatment not being absorbed into the body properly, if at all. The 8-hour and 30-minute fasts include food and drink, so only water is allowed with the pill.

Can I Eat Right After Taking the Wegovy Pill?

You must wait the allotted 30 minutes after taking the Wegovy pill before consuming any foods or fluids. This ensures the semaglutide can be properly absorbed into your system. If additional substances enter your stomach while the process is still occurring, the pill could be drastically less effective, and that day's dosage could be lost.

Why Do I Need to Fast Before Taking the Wegovy Pill?

Fasting is required so the Wegovy pill can be absorbed properly. Food in the stomach can disrupt, lessen, or even drastically reduce absorption. This wastes a dosage of the medication, the money you spent on it, and means your weight-loss goals are one more dose out of reach.

Can You Take Wegovy Tablets Every Other Day?

No, you cannot take Wegovy pills intermittently. This is a practice known as microdosing - some try it to save money, others because they believe it will allow them to reach their weight-loss goals faster. No matter the reason, it is a fundamentally untested practice that could cause more harm than good. The dosage schedule is in place to keep you safe.

If you accidentally miss a dose, skip it and resume the treatment the next day. If you are struggling to keep up a consistent daily schedule, speak to your clinician, and they can advise you further.

When to Take the Wegovy Pill

Wegovy pills have strict rules around time of administration that must be followed. Without them, incorrect dosage timing and quantities could make the medication less effective or lead to severe side effects.

What is the Best Time to Take Wegovy Pills?

In theory, the Wegovy pill can be taken at any time of day. However, most people opt to take it first thing in the morning because it requires an 8-hour fast before administration. This fast can be easily achieved overnight during sleep, and taking it daily at this time will help build an easy-to-remember routine.

Can You Take the Wegovy Pill at Night?

As stated, you can theoretically fast for 8 hours every day and take the pill in the afternoon or evening, but this will likely prove difficult to keep up day after day. Alternatively, if you work overnight and have a different sleeping schedule from most people, then taking the pills at night may work out better for you.

Can You Take the Wegovy Pill at Night Before Bed?

Taking the Wegovy pill before bed may sound ideal if you experience side effects immediately after taking it and can sleep through them, but it would require daily upkeep of this schedule. It is possible, but for consistency, it is not advised.

The injections, however, can be taken without the 8-hour fast, so you may take them at night before bed.

What if You Forget to Take Your Wegovy Pill

Accidentally missing a day’s Wegovy pill is not ideal, but it is understandable. Not to worry if this does happen; simply skip that day’s dosage and take the next day’s as usual, at your usual time. Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed one.

If you find you regularly forget to take the pill, speak to your clinician. The more regularly you take it, the better your body becomes at handling the medication. Speak to your clinician, and they can advise you further.

Can I Take the Wegovy Pill With Other Medications?

Only certain medications may be affected by Wegovy pills. These include other oral medications - since the treatment slows the rate of digestion, this could impact the effectiveness of other tablets that are absorbed during the digestive process. Taking other oral medications may also affect Wegovy's effectiveness. This is why the 30-minute post-administration fast is necessary - after this time has elapsed, you should be good to take other medications again, but if unsure, check with your clinician first.

Diabetes medications like insulin will still work alongside Wegovy, but they would require close monitoring by a clinician. This is because they both lower blood sugar, so if they work together, blood sugar levels can become dangerously low.

Other GLP-1 medications can result in similar dangerous effects, as ‘too much of a good thing’ can be severely harmful. For a list of specific medications that interact with Wegovy pills, check the Patient Information Leaflet, or consult with your clinician.

What Wegovy Pill Dose Should I Take?

Your Wegovy pill dose depends on several factors and will ultimately be decided by your clinician. If you are starting weight-loss treatments from scratch, you will be put on the lowest dosage, 1.5mg. Your dosage will then increase periodically as you progress through treatment, so your body can become accustomed to higher doses over time.

If you are switching to Wegovy pills from Wegovy injections, or from a different treatment like Mounjaro, then you may be able to start at a higher dose. This also requires clinician approval and depends on the dosage of your previous treatment.

How to Create a Routine for Taking Wegovy Tablets

Dedication and commitment are key to building a regular Wegovy routine and seeing overall success with the treatment. To ensure you don’t forget to take the pill, try keeping it visible by your bedside, such as beside a clock or on top of your phone, so it becomes one of the first things you see/reach for in the morning. Place a glass of water next to it the night before so you don’t even need to get out of bed to administer it.

You can also set a daily reminder on your phone or device to take the pill, or leave Post-it notes where you will see them during your morning routine. The sooner you get into the habit of taking them daily, the better.

Frequently Asked Questions About Taking Wegovy Pill

Despite being rigorously tested over the last few years, Wegovy pills are still finding their footing in the UK market, which means those considering the pill often have questions about the treatment. Here are a few that we see the most:

Do You Take the Wegovy Pill Daily or Weekly?

The Wegovy pill is taken daily, whereas Wegovy injections are taken weekly. Since the pill was released on the UK market, more people are switching to it from the injections, as the administration process is preferable despite being more frequent.

What Happens If I Take the Wegovy Pill After Eating?

Taking the Wegovy pill after eating causes it to be drastically less effective. The 8-hour fast ensures the maximum amount of semaglutide is absorbed into your system and that you get the most out of the treatment.

Can You Take the Wegovy Pill While Breastfeeding?

No, you should not take Wegovy while breastfeeding. The effects are unknown and have not been studied enough to provide sufficient evidence. For the health of both parent and baby, do not take Wegovy while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can You Drink Alcohol While Taking Wegovy Pills?

You may drink some alcohol while taking Wegovy, but extreme moderation is advised. Since one of the most common side effects of Wegovy is nausea, alcohol can worsen it significantly. Furthermore, alcohol is not ideal for a weight-loss diet, so even without the addition of worsening side effects, you should be avoiding it anyway.
