Wegovy Pill Dosing Schedule Explained

Since its release in July 2026, the Wegovy pill has secured its position as a favoured option for weight loss on the UK market. It has shown consistently high success rates in clinical trials, with average weight reductions of 16.6%, and is preferred by many for its ease of administration compared with injections. However, because it is a strong treatment, it must be taken at steadily increasing dosages so as not to overwhelm your body; otherwise, severe side effects may come into effect.

This is where the ‘dosage schedule’ comes in: a timetable that tells you exactly when to take your dose and when your next dose will increase. This guide explains the Wegovy pill dosage schedule in full - note that we will not be covering the Wegovy injection dosage schedule. We will answer any questions you may have about the Wegovy pill timeline so that you can make a well-informed decision on whether the treatment is right for you.

Why is there a Wegovy Pill Dosage Schedule?

The Wegovy pill dosage schedule exists for your benefit. It can be frustrating not to take the highest amount and see fast progress right away, but it is for your own good. If one were to start at a high dosage, the side effects could be unbearable and very severe, as the sudden intake of semaglutide (its active ingredient) could disrupt the body.

The semaglutide Wegovy introduces into the body isn’t naturally occurring, so the body needs time to adjust. This is also why the treatment gradually increases in dosage to provide a steady curve that best suits your body and will not overwhelm it. Even when switching from a similar treatment, like Mounjaro or Wegovy injections, you may still start on a low or the lowest dosage, but in time you’ll be able to get back to where you were.

What is the Dosage of Wegovy Pills?

Wegovy pills are available in four dosage strengths: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. You will start at 1.5mg, then the dosage increases with every month you remain on the treatment. Once you hit 25mg, this is the dosage you will continue at for as long as you take it, and it is referred to as the ‘maintenance dose’.

What is the Lowest Dose of Wegovy Pills?

The lowest dosage of Wegovy pills is 1.5mg, and this will be the amount you start on. You’ll typically stay with it for a month before moving up to the 4mg. It will likely show low rates of weight loss, but this is perfectly normal - think of it as the treatment’s appetiser, something to get your body warmed up and ready for the main course, which in this case would be the higher dosages.

What is the Wegovy Pill Maintenance Dose?

The maintenance dose of Wegovy pills is 25mg, and the earliest you can reach this amount is when starting your fourth month of the treatment. You will remain on this amount until the treatment has run its course, though if you miss a significant number of doses, you may be placed on a lower dose again to allow your body to readjust.

What is the Highest Dose of the Wegovy Pill?

The highest available dosage of Wegovy pill is 25mg, but interestingly, a 50mg dosage has been clinically trialled. It averages weight loss of 15-17%, but this came alongside increased amounts and severity of side effects, particularly gastrointestinal ones. There may one day be a 50mg Wegovy pill on the market and available to the public, but that day will come only after rigorous testing and clinical trials ensure every aspect of the treatment is safe and approved.

What Wegovy Pill Dose Should I Take?

If you’re new to weight-loss treatments, your clinician will start you on a dose of 1.5mg. You can start at a higher dose, but this would require you to already be in the middle of a different GLP-1 treatment. Switching from Wegovy or Mounjaro injections is a relatively simple process, but it needs to be clinician-led - their advice is key.

There is no guarantee you can switch from a high treatment dosage to an equally high one, as clinicians decide this on a case-by-case basis. They will consider how well your body has responded to treatment, how severe your side effects have been, and your overall progress and well-being.

Here is a demonstration of what the switching process could be with Prescription Doctor, but remember this is not guaranteed:

What Dose of Wegovy Pills is Best for Weight Loss?

The best dosage of the Wegovy pill for weight loss is 25mg, the highest amount currently prescribed, with an average weight loss of around 14%. At the lowest dose, you may see a weight loss of up to 2% in the first month. After three months, the number rises to around 5%, then this doubles again to 10% by the end of six months.

Consistency is key for this treatment, as the greatest effects won't happen quickly. It takes dedication and dietary and lifestyle changes to maximise the effects of the Wegovy pill, even on the highest dosage.

The Wegovy Pill Dosing Chart

We have created a visual guide to help demonstrate the Wegovy pill dosage schedule:

Do You Have to Increase the Wegovy Pill Dose?

No, you do not have to increase your Wegovy pill dosage. You may find you’re making significant enough progress before you reach 25mg that titration (moving up a dosage level) isn’t necessary. You may also find that your body is slow to adjust to the side effects caused by Wegovy pills. In this case, a slower, more gradual titration may be suggested, such as increasing every two months instead of every month. The treatment is flexible and should be moulded to your specific needs.

Can I Stay On a Low Dose of Wegovy Pills?

Yes, if needed, you can remain on 1.5 mg or 4 mg and never increase to higher doses. This may be appealing for those dealing with severe side effects, as an increased dosage may make them worse. If you have increased your treatment to a higher dose and decide you’d rather stick to a lower one, that’s absolutely fine too. After all, it’s your weight loss treatment, so you have a say in the pace of your progress. Simply speak with a clinician, and they will recommend the best dosage for you.

Does Wegovy Pill Dosage Affect Side Effects?

Yes, Wegovy pill dosage will likely affect your side effects. As your dosage increases, so does the amount of semaglutide in your body, which can increase the number and severity of side effects. This is why the gradual increase is necessary to allow your body time to adjust to the treatment.

Do Side Effects Worsen at a Higher Dose?

It is not uncommon for side effects to worsen at high doses of Wegovy, but this is not guaranteed. On the one hand, there is more semaglutide in your system; on the other, your body should have had plenty of time to adjust, so it varies from person to person.

How to Manage Side Effects After a Dose Increase

Since Wegovy pills tend to cause gastrointestinal side effects, there are a number of dietary-related steps you can take to help reduce them.

Try splitting your meals into smaller and more frequent ones - instead of three large meals a day, try five or six small ones. Chew slowly and take your time; mealtimes shouldn't be a race. Very important yet often overlooked: stop when you feel full. You won’t be used to having such a reduced appetite, so it can be easy to eat as much as you think you want, but it’s important not to overfill yourself, as this can lead to high levels of nausea.

Stay hydrated throughout the day with water or electrolyte-rich fluids, while avoiding caffeine and alcohol. It’s also best to avoid spicy, fried, and fatty foods. The healthier your plate, the easier your side effects will be to manage.

What if I Can’t Tolerate a Dose Increase?

If you have increased your dosage of Wegovy and the side effects are too intense to manage, you can always drop back down again. There is no shame in this, and it is a perfectly reasonable choice to make - just consult with your clinician first for their approval.

If you decide to stick with it, you can stay on the increased dose and allow your body time to adjust, which should reduce the severity of the side effects over time. However, if the side effects are too severe to put up with, or cause extreme stomach pain, vomiting or dehydration, then you should contact your clinician straight away. If they cause abdominal pain, stop taking Wegovy and seek urgent medical assistance.

Wegovy Pill Dosage Guidelines

The guidelines for the Wegovy pill are strict, and for good reason. Remember, this treatment can be greatly beneficial, but only when taken correctly. You must take the medicine exactly as scheduled and as your clinician advises.

Can I Cut Wegovy Pills in Half?

You absolutely cannot cut Wegovy pills in half. For the pill to be effective, it must be absorbed in the stomach, amidst the acids within. To achieve this, it is co-formulated with Salcaprozate Sodium. Splitting, crushing, or chewing the pill may affect its absorption, which could reduce the treatment’s effectiveness.

What if I Miss a Wegovy Pill Dose?

If you miss a Wegovy pill dose, don’t panic; it’s not the end of the world. Skip the missed dose and take the next day’s pill as normal, and you should be fine. Do not take two doses to make up for a missed one, as this can lead to severe side effects.

If you find you are consistently missing doses, or it has been over a week since your last one, speak to your clinician - they may suggest going back to a lower dosage for the time being. Missing a week of 25mg and then taking one out of the blue could create more severe side effects. Ask your clinician how long you have missed doses, and they can advise you further.

Wegovy Pill vs Injection Dose

Despite containing the same active ingredient, the dosing schedule for the Wegovy pill differs from that of the Wegovy injection. The type of administration can make all the difference:

Why is the Wegovy Pill Dose Higher than the Injections?

Wegovy pills contain a much higher mg dose than the injections, but that doesn't mean one is more effective or more potent than the other; it simply reflects the different methods of administration.

Because Wegovy injections are administered directly under the skin, the majority of the semaglutide is absorbed. By comparison, the oral medication must first pass through the digestive system, so less semaglutide is absorbed. So, it requires a higher dose of semaglutide to compensate for the larger amount that is lost to waste.

Wegovy Pill Dosing: Frequently Asked Questions

With such a strict dosage schedule, we are often asked questions by those with further concerns about Wegovy pills. Here are a number that we see frequently:

Can I Take Wegovy Pills at Night?

It is generally not recommended to take Wegovy pills at night. Since they must be taken after an eight-hour fast, it is easiest to take them first thing in the morning. Fasting eight hours a day, every day, will likely be impractical.

What if I Eat Too Soon After Taking a Wegovy Tablet?

It isn’t the end of the world if you eat too soon after taking a Wegovy pill, but you should really, really try not to. While it may not cause additional side effects, it will greatly reduce the medication's effectiveness, essentially wasting the majority of that day’s treatment.

The 30-minute fast after taking the pill prevents food from entering the stomach and interrupting the absorption process.

Are Wegovy Pill Doses the Same as Injections?

Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections contain the same active ingredient, Semaglutide. They differ in administration, have slight differences in side effects, and are taken at different doses: the pill is taken daily, and the injection is given weekly. Other than that, they work in largely the same way, with the injection averaging as slightly more effective for weight loss.

How Long Should I Take the Wegovy Pill?

The simple answer is: as long as you need it. Treatments in trials tend to last 64 weeks, and by then an average weight loss of around 14% is achieved. You may stop the treatment before this point if you have already reached your weight loss goal, or continue it for further benefit. No matter the timeframe, your clinician will help and advise you along the way.

Once you stop taking Wegovy pills, the appetite suppression and slowed digestion will wear off - semaglutide usually remains in the body for 5-7 weeks. This can result in weight regain, as a study of 2.4mg Wegovy injections found patients regained around ⅔ of what they lost, or 66%. You should keep up the healthy diet and lifestyle changes you made while on the treatment to minimise the amount of weight put back on, and also speak to your clinician about coming off the treatment gradually - the reverse of the gradual start. This may help to make the transition off the treatment smoother, with fewer side effects.

Can I Take More than One Wegovy Pill Per Day?

No. Do not take more than one Wegovy pill a day, as this can produce severe side effects due to an excessive amount of semaglutide in the body. It can be extremely dangerous to take two pills a day, so never do so, even if you missed your dose the day prior.
