Wegovy Hair Loss: What You Should Know

All medications have the potential to cause side effects, so it’s essential that you carry out extensive research on what you could expect before deciding whether a treatment might be suitable for you. Wegovy tablets and Wegovy injections are no exception, with each variation having a similar side effect profile.

One possible adverse reaction is hair loss, which is the topic of this article. Although semaglutide (Wegovy’s active ingredient) itself doesn’t cause hair loss, the weight loss and other effects of the medication could result in hair thinning and other symptoms. But why is this?

Join us as we explore the ins and outs of Wegovy hair loss, explain the reasons behind it, and offer information on how to potentially resolve the condition wherever possible.

Does Wegovy Cause Hair Loss?

Wegovy treatment can cause hair loss as a secondary side effect of dietary changes, rapid weight loss, and hormonal shifts. Though hair loss on Wegovy is often temporary, it can be distressing for those experiencing it. Here, we’ll discuss the key causes of hair loss on Wegovy, steps you can take to mitigate this side effect, and when to speak to a doctor about thinning hair.

How Common Is Hair Loss with Wegovy?

Hair loss is listed as a common side effect of Wegovy and is thought to affect up to 1 in 10 people on the medication. In many cases, this side effect results from significant weight loss, and the risk of hair loss increases with weight reduction. One study found that 5.3% of Wegovy patients who lost more than 20% of their total body weight experienced hair loss, compared with 2.5% of those who lost less than 20%. However, weight loss isn’t the only contributing factor to hair loss on Wegovy, and nutritional insufficiencies and hormonal shifts can also play a role.

Why Does Wegovy Cause Hair Loss?

Semaglutide doesn’t directly damage hair follicles, so hair loss on Wegovy is usually a secondary side effect of other physiological changes caused by the medication. For example, rapid weight loss, changes to your diet, and stress can all contribute to or exacerbate hair loss. Hormonal shifts caused by Wegovy may also play a role, though researchers are yet to confirm this.

Changes in Diet

Wegovy suppresses appetite, leading many users to significantly reduce their food intake. This often promotes significant weight loss, but it can also cause nutritional insufficiencies that impact hair health.

For example, deficiencies in vitamin D, iron, zinc, and biotin can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. Decreased protein intake can also lead to hair thinning and hair loss, as keratin (a protein) is the key structural component of hair. If you are concerned about your nutritional intake on Wegovy, speak to a doctor. They may recommend blood tests to detect insufficiencies and offer advice concerning dietary choices and supplementation.

Rapid Weight Loss

Rapid weight loss is a common outcome of Wegovy treatment, and this places the body under physiological stress. This stress can push a large number of hairs out of the anagen (growth) phase and into the telogen (resting) phase, triggering a condition called telogen effluvium. Under normal conditions, around 15% of hair is in the telogen phase. In telogen effluvium, this percentage can rise to 30% or more, causing a sudden, noticeable increase in shedding.

Telogen effluvium is most common among people who lose a significant percentage of their starting weight on Wegovy. One study reported that participants experienced hair thinning after a mean weight loss of 15.21%, though this is not a fixed threshold for hair loss. They also found that the condition was more common among women and older adults, even if their rate of weight loss was lower than that of men and younger adults.

Hormonal Changes & Stress

Researchers have theorised that semaglutide may cause hormonal fluctuations leading to temporarily increased androgen levels, an effect that can contribute to a type of hair loss called androgenic alopecia. Activation of androgen receptors in the hair follicles shortens the anagen (or growth) phase of the hair. This causes hair follicles to become thinner and shorter, leading to hair loss in both men and women.

Stress hormones can also play a role in hair loss on Wegovy, as studies have found that severe calorie restriction can increase blood cortisol levels. Cortisol is released by the neuroendocrine system, specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, in times of emotional or physiological stress. Elevated cortisol levels can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to increased hair fall and thinning.

How to Stop Hair Loss from Wegovy

You may not be able to prevent hair loss on Wegovy, but there are steps you can take to promote hair health. For example, slowing your rate of weight loss, eating a balanced diet, implementing stress management techniques, and practising gentle hair care can all help to mitigate hair loss on Wegovy.

Steady and Sustainable Weight Loss

Rapid weight loss is a key trigger for telogen effluvium, which is reported to occur at a mean weight reduction of around 15%. Therefore, you may be able to minimise hair fall by losing weight at a slower pace. The NHS recommends safe and sustainable weight loss at a rate of 0.5 to 1 kg per week.

You may be able to achieve this by remaining on a lower maintenance dose for longer, rather than titrating up every four weeks. If you would like to adjust your Wegovy dosing schedule to slow your weight-loss rate, discuss this with your prescribing clinician first. You may also slow your rate of weight loss by:

  • Increasing your calorie intake with healthy, energy-dense foods like nuts, avocados, and olive oil
  • Adding resistance training to your workout routine and prioritising protein-rich foods to promote muscle growth and health
  • Avoiding skipping meals

Manage Stress Levels

Rapid weight loss can increase levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, which can disrupt the hair growth cycle and contribute to shedding.  Therefore, finding ways to manage your stress hormone levels could significantly benefit hair health.

Stress management methods may include prioritising sleep, making time to relax, talking with family and friends, and practising mindfulness techniques. Exercise can also be a powerful regulator, and mind-body practises like yoga and qigong may be particularly beneficial for lowering cortisol levels.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Wegovy and other GLP-1 therapies significantly reduce appetite, with users reducing their overall calorie consumption by up to 39%. This can lead to reduced dietary intake of nutrients that support hair health, including protein, Vitamin D, biotin, and zinc, and may contribute to hair loss.

Eating a balanced diet may help to minimise hair loss on Wegovy by ensuring your body gets all the materials it needs to support hair growth. The official NHS advice for healthy eating habits on Wegovy is to:

  • Make cooking less of a chore (for example, by using pre-cut vegetables or exploring healthy ready-meal options)
  • Serve a balanced plate (i.e., one-quarter lean protein, one-quarter starchy carbohydrates, one-half vegetables or fruit)
  • Only snack if you are physically hungry and prioritise fruits, vegetables, and protein sources
  • Eat mindfully

Gentle Hair Care

Thinning hair is fragile and easily damaged, and rough handling, harsh chemicals, and heat can all contribute to breakage and shedding. Practising proper hair and scalp care may help to mitigate this and, therefore, reduce hair fall on Wegovy. Recommendations for gentle hair care include:

  • Wash hair only with your fingertips and avoid massaging the scalp, as this can pull on hair
  • Use gentle shampoos
  • Condition your hair to reduce breakage
  • Avoid tight hairstyles (like buns, ponytails, braids, cornrows, and pigtails)
  • Detangle hair gently using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush
  • Avoid excessive heat from hair styling tools, hair dryers, and hot showers, as this can further weaken the hair
  • Avoid smoking, as this causes inflammation throughout the body, which can make hair loss worse

Do I Need to See a Doctor About Wegovy Hair Loss?

In many cases, hair loss on Wegovy is a temporary response to rapid weight loss that doesn’t require treatment. However, hair loss can be a symptom of other health issues such as nutrient deficiency, hormonal imbalances, stress, and other medical conditions. If your hair loss is persistent or severe, accompanied by scalp irritation, or causes you distress, schedule an appointment with your doctor for medical assessment and advice.

Should I Stop Treatment if I Experience Hair Loss with Wegovy?

Hair loss can be a distressing side effect of Wegovy, but it doesn’t mean you have to stop using the medication. For example, telogen effluvium, one of the most common causes of hair loss on semaglutide, is usually a temporary condition triggered by rapid weight loss. This type of hair loss rarely requires treatment to resolve, with hair regrowth typically restarting after 3-6 months. However, you should contact your prescribing clinician if you are experiencing hair loss or other Wegovy side effects.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wegovy Hair Loss

Does Wegovy Cause Hair Loss in Women?

Wegovy can cause hair loss in both women and men, but it is more frequently reported by female users. Researchers can’t say conclusively why this is, but suggest that women may be more susceptible to drug-induced alopecia and more sensitive to hormonal shifts than men. Hair loss may also be more noticeable and distressing for women than men and, therefore, more likely to be reported to doctors.

Does Wegovy Cause Hair Thinning?

Rapid weight loss on Wegovy can trigger a condition called telogen effluvium, in which physiological stress disrupts the normal hair growth cycle. This can shift large numbers of hairs from the ‘growing’ anagen phase into the ‘resting’ telogen phase, leading to a sudden increase in shedding across the whole head. When this happens, hair can feel noticeably thinner than before. In most cases, telogen effluvium is a temporary condition, with hair regrowth starting after 3-6 months.

Is Hair Loss with Wegovy More Common at Higher Doses?

Hair loss on Wegovy is most frequently observed among people taking higher doses such as 2.4 mg per week. This is because higher GLP-1 doses produce greater appetite suppression and, therefore, weight loss.

One study observed telogen effluvium after participants had lost an average of 15.21% of their starting weight. Therefore, you may be able to reduce your risk of hair loss on Wegovy by losing weight at a slow and steady pace. Speak to your prescribing clinician about dosing schedules and lifestyle choices that support this goal.

When Does Hair Loss With Wegovy Begin?

Hair loss caused by telogen effluvium begins up to four months after the triggering event. When a hair follicle enters the telogen phase, it stops growing and ‘rests’ for 2-4 months. When a new hair starts to grow, it pushes the ‘resting’ hair out of the follicle, causing it to fall out. Among people using Wegovy, the ‘triggering event’ for telogen effluvium is usually rapid weight loss, which may only occur after several months of treatment.

Wegovy Hair Loss: Does it Grow Back?

Wegovy-related hair loss caused by telogen effluvium is usually temporary and resolves on its own without medication. Hair will naturally start regrowing after 3-6 months, though it can take a long time to return to its previous volume. If your hair loss is severe or persistent, causing distress, or accompanied by scalp irritation, make an appointment with a healthcare professional for medical assessment and advice.

How Soon After Stopping Wegovy Does Hair Grow Back?

Because semaglutide itself is not responsible for hair loss, stopping Wegovy will not make your hair grow back any sooner. Telogen effluvium itself lasts for around 6 months, whether or not you are using Wegovy, so there’s no need to stop treatment to try and save your hair. Stopping Wegovy could also result in some of the weight you have lost coming back.

Is Hair Loss a Side Effect of Mounjaro as well as Wegovy?

Yes, hair loss with Mounjaro is listed as a common side effect of tirzepatide use that may affect up to 1 in 10 people. The causes of Mounjaro hair loss are similar to those with Wegovy and can be addressed in similar ways.

Can I Use Hair Loss Treatments?

Yes, there are several hair loss treatments that may help with Wegovy hair loss. However, you would need to go through a consultation process to determine whether they would be suitable for you to take. Available medications include Finasteride, Dutasteride, and Minoxidil (also known as Regaine).
