Testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are the top two most common bacterial STIs (sexually transmitted infections) in the UK.

In 2017, chlamydia infections made up almost half (48%) of all new diagnoses of STIs in England. The same year saw a 22% rise in gonorrhoea diagnoses. It is not uncommon for someone to be infected with both gonorrhoea and chlamydia at the same time.

You can prevent getting chlamydia and gonorrhoea by using condoms when you have sex.

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is an STI caused by bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. The bacteria can be spread through unprotected anal, oral and vaginal sex, but can also be transmitted through the sharing of sex toys.

What is gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is also an STI caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonorrhoea is easily spread through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex. It can also be spread by sharing sex toys.

Both chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections cause similar symptoms, such as:

  • Bleeding or discharge from the anus
  • Discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Pain when urinating
  • Rectal pain
  • Unusual bleeding in women

However, both chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be asymptomatic, meaning that you could have the infection without showing any symptoms.

If left untreated, both chlamydia and gonorrhoea can cause infertility in men and women.

Both infections can also cause other complications including epididymitis, proctitis and prostate gland infections in men, and pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and premature birth, in women.

The only way of knowing if you have either chlamydia or gonorrhoea is to get tested.

When should I get tested?

Gonorrhoea and chlamydia can take up to 2 weeks before being detected. However, it is recommended to still get tested as soon as possible if you believe you could have contracted the infection.

If you take a test less than a week after you had sex with an infected person, your test may produce a false negative. You should wait at least a week after the time of exposure, to test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing kit

We understand that getting tested for STIs can be embarrassing. With our testing kit, you can test yourself from the comfort of your own home.

The home testing kit is quick and simple to use.

The kit contains:

  • A name label to affix to the vial
  • A plastic wallet
  • A prepaid envelope
  • A request form
  • A test kit box
  • A urine collection box
  • A urine sample vial

How to use the testing kit

The best time to take the urine sample is first thing in the morning.

Start by filling in the provided documentation (the request form and the label). Make sure to fill in these documents clearly with a ballpoint pen.

Start urinating into the urine collection box until it is filled halfway. Continue urinating into the toilet.

Carefully pour the urine into the urine sample vial until it fills up to the marked line. Don't let any urine touch the outside of the vial.

Pour the remaining sample in the collection box down the toilet and discard the box.

Affix the name label as shown in the provided instructions and tighten the cap onto the top of the vial.

Secure the urine sample into the plastic wallet.

Place the sample wallet, containing the urine sample, and the request form into the test kit box.

Secure the box inside the prepaid envelope and post it at your earliest convenience.

So long as you have followed the instructions correctly, your home test should be as accurate as the one you would receive in a GUM or sexual health clinic.
