Background to the Ozempic weight loss injection in the UK

Wegovy is the UK alternative to Ozempic for weight loss and is available online from Prescription Doctor. Ozempic is not licensed in the UK for weight loss, but Wegovy is. They both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide.

The main difference between Ozempic and Wegovy, aside from their licensed use, is the maximum dose. Ozempic only titrates up to a weekly dose of 2 mg, whereas Wegovy has a maximum maintenance dose of 2.4 mg per week. This weight loss dose means Wegovy is more effective and can help you lose a meaningful amount of weight, up to 15% of your original weight in 68 weeks at the highest dose.

If you are looking to switch from Ozempic to Wegovy or Mounjaro, our clinicians can help. Start a weight loss consultation now.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is an injectable medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which is the same as the weight loss injection Wegovy. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means it mimics the effects of GLP-1, a hormone released after you eat, to control blood glucose levels and can help you lose weight.

Ozempic is used to help control and reduce high blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes complications such as heart disease.

How does Ozempic work for weight loss?

Ozempic is not currently available for weight loss in the UK. Instead, Wegovy, which contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic, semaglutide, is licensed for weight loss in the UK.

Ozempic and Wegovy belong to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. For blood sugar management, Ozempic works by binding to the GLP-1 receptors in the brain to stimulate the pancreas to release insulin, lowering glucose levels and slowing the release of glucagon (stored sugar) from your liver.

For weight loss, semaglutide works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which is released when you eat, signalling to your brain that you feel full. When you inject Wegovy for weight loss, it plays a crucial role in regulating your appetite, making you feel full and less hungry. Eventually, this leads to a reduced intake of food and weight loss.

Ozempic dosage for weight loss

The semaglutide dosage is titrated over 5 months to allow your body to become accustomed to the active ingredient and minimise the risk of side effects.

Because Ozempic isn’t available for weight loss, the Wegovy dosing schedule is shown below:

Wegovy is available in 5 different doses. It is self-injected once a week, and everyone needs to begin Wegovy treatment on the starting dose of 0.25 mg once a week for four weeks.

Can I switch from Ozempic to Wegovy?

If you have already been taking Ozempic, then you should be able to switch to Wegovy by taking the equivalent dose. That’s because Ozempic and Wegovy contain the same active ingredients.

For example, if you are currently taking 1 mg of Ozempic per week, you can switch to a weekly 1 mg dose of Wegovy. However, you must do this under the guidance of a clinician.

If you want to switch from Ozempic to Wegovy, complete a short online health consultation, providing our clinicians with all the relevant information about your Ozempic history. Our clinicians can then help you safely switch from Ozempic to Wegovy.

If you are switching to an equivalent dose, you should not experience any new side effects.

Yes, Ozempic is legal in the UK; however, it is not licensed for weight loss, but rather for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Some private weight loss clinics may prescribe Ozempic ‘off label’, where medication is prescribed outside the scope of its licence. Although this is legal, it can lead to shortages of the medication for those who need it. Instead, Wegovy is a licensed semaglutide-containing weight loss medication administered as an injection.

Where can I buy Ozempic?

Can I buy Ozempic online for weight loss?

No, but Wegovy is available online for weight loss. Ozempic may be available from some online services for weight loss, but it will be prescribed ‘off-label’. The Wegovy dose, however, has been specifically formulated for weight loss, so you can expect to achieve better weight loss results with Wegovy.

Can you buy Ozempic over the counter?

No, Ozempic is not available over-the-counter. Alli is an over-the-counter weight loss tablet that’s available from most UK pharmacies and online without a prescription.

Is Ozempic available on the NHS?

Ozempic is available on the NHS for the treatment of type 2 diabetes; however, it is not approved for weight loss. Ozempic may be available on private prescription from some weight loss clinics. However, Wegovy is an alternative weight loss injection that has been approved for weight loss in the UK and is available on the NHS, containing the same active ingredient as Ozempic. Orlistat is also available on the NHS for weight loss.

Ozempic side effects

Ozempic side effects are similar to Wegovy’s because they contain the same active ingredient.

Very common Ozempic side effects include:

  • feeling sick
  • diarrhoea
  • low blood sugar

Common Ozempic side effects are: being sick,

  • low blood sugar
  • indigestion
  • gastritis
  • stomach pain
  • bloating
  • burping
  • gallstones
  • dizziness
  • tiredness
  • gas

Ozempic side effects are usually worse when you first start the medication or when you increase the dose, but they should subside as your body gets used to semaglutide. However, severe side effects like an inflamed pancreas or an allergic reaction will require immediate medical attention.

Ozempic alternatives

Although Ozempic is not licensed for weight loss in the UK, there are several weight loss injections that are.

Wegovy is the closest weight loss injection to Ozempic because it contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide. That means Ozempic and Wegovy work in exactly the same way, except Wegovy contains a different dose, formulated to support weight loss. At Prescription Doctor, Wegovy prices start from £139.99.

Mounjaro is another weight loss injection which contains the active ingredient, tirzepatide. It is a dual-action medication because it acts as both a GLP-1 receptor agonist and a GIP receptor agonist, thereby mimicking two hormones that play a crucial role in regulating appetite. Research shows that at the highest maintenance dose of 15 mg per week, Mounjaro can help people lose up to 22.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks. Mounjaro prices start from £159.99 at Prescription Doctor.

Weight loss pills are also available as an alternative to weight loss injections, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, if they are not suitable for you. Currently, orlistat (Xenical) is available to buy online and may be available from the NHS. It works by binding to the fat you eat and stopping it from being absorbed by your body. An over-the-counter version, Alli, is also available without a prescription. We also offer MySimba, which works by regulating your appetite.

Summary

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that is licensed for weight loss in the UK under the brand name Wegovy. Ozempic is licensed for treating type 2 diabetes and lowering high blood sugar levels, not weight loss. However, some private weight loss clinics and other online services may offer Ozempic ‘off-label’. Although this is perfectly legal, it can lead to Ozempic shortages, and because Ozempic is available at a lower dose than Wegovy, it may result in less meaningful weight loss.

How Does Ozempic Work?

Starting a medicated weight loss programme is an important decision that requires careful research and consideration. It’s essential to have a solid understanding of available treatments so you can make a more informed decision about which one may be right for your circumstances.Ozempic is a brand name you’re likely to have come across in your research. Although it’s not licensed for obesity in the UK, it does have uses for other medical conditions. So, how does Ozempic work, what can you take it for, and is there a similar product available for weight loss? This article has all the answers.  [medical_form product_id="380" text="START YOUR WEIGHT LOSS CONSULTATION TODAY" type="button"] What’s Ozempic?Ozempic is a brand name for the active ingredient, semaglutide, which belongs to a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists, also known as incretin mimetics or GLP-1 receptor agonists. If you’ve been researching weight loss injections, you may have already heard of semaglutide, as it’s also the active ingredient in Wegovy.Much like Wegovy, Ozempic is administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once per week and works in a similar way. Wegovy has a higher maintenance dose, making it more effective for its intended purpose of treating obesity. Ozempic: What is it Used For?Ozempic is licensed in the UK for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, which is characterised by insulin resistance and a relative insulin deficiency. It is not licensed for weight loss, although some private clinics used to prescribe it “off-label” for uses outside its approved indications.Getting a medication for off-label use carries risks because it has not undergone the rigorous testing required for regulatory approval that it would have for its intended use. Although the practice is legal, choosing a medication for its licensed use is the safest and most effective option. Off-label prescribing can also lead to shortages of the medication who require it the most.Several GLP-1 agonists are available in the UK for weight loss, including Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Nevolat. Each contains a different active ingredient, has a different mechanism of action, and follows a different dosage schedule. How Does Ozempic (Semaglutide) Work?Ozempic contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which works by mimicking the effects of GLP-1, a hormone that’s naturally produced by your stomach when you eat. It regulates blood sugar levels and controls your appetite. By mimicking this hormone, GLP-1 receptor agonists can treat type 2 diabetes and/or obesity by promoting insulin secretion, slowing digestion, and helping you feel full.Ozempic is used to manage type 2 diabetes and works by helping your body produce more insulin when needed. It also lowers the amount of sugar (glucose) your liver produces, and slows the movement of food through your stomach. Together, these help to keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range and can contribute to weight loss.  Although Ozempic can work for both weight loss and type 2 diabetes, it is only intended for controlling blood sugar levels in the UK. Here's how Ozempic works for both these purposes. How Does Ozempic Work for Weight Loss? Ozempic supports weight loss in three main ways: it reduces appetite, slows digestion, and stimulates insulin release. When combined, these can help individuals develop a healthier relationship with food and combat obesity when taken alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise.Next, we’ll outline how Ozempic helps with weight loss in more detail: 1. Appetite Reduction Semaglutide acts like GLP-1 by binding to the receptors in the brain that regulate appetite, particularly after you have eaten. When bound to these receptors, your brain gets the message that you are full, so you’ll stop eating. It can also activate nerve cells that reduce hunger and cravings while preventing the release of appetite-stimulating chemicals.2. Slower DigestionWhen food is digested, and your stomach is empty, hormones are released that signal to the brain that you feel hungry, topping up your energy levels. How long it takes for food to pass through your stomach depends on whether it is liquid or solid and its calorific value, but it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours for your stomach to fully empty after a meal. However, semaglutide can slow gastric emptying, helping you feel fuller for longer.  3. Insulin ReleaseWhen you eat, the body breaks down food into glucose, also known as sugar. To help your cells absorb the sugar from the blood and use it for energy, the pancreas releases insulin. When the body’s energy demands are met, insulin levels increase to deal with the rapid rise in blood sugar, signalling to the brain that we’re full. By stimulating insulin release from your pancreas, Ozempic helps improve insulin sensitivity and maintain healthy blood sugar levels, encouraging your body to burn fat for energy.Ozempic Works for Weight Loss, But Isn’t RecommendedOzempic is not recommended for weight loss because it is formulated to manage type 2 diabetes, not obesity. However, its active ingredient, semaglutide, is available as a weight loss injection under the brand name Wegovy and has been extensively studied and developed specifically for weight management.Wegovy is available in 6 doses, including the maximum dose of 7.2mg per week. Clinical trials have shown that at the maximum dose, the average weight loss over 72 weeks was 21%, compared with 2.4% on placebo.    {add_product_block(380)} How Does Ozempic Work for Diabetes? Ozempic treats diabetes by mimicking the body’s natural glucagon-like peptide-1 hormone, improving how the body regulates blood sugar after meals and between meals. There are several key ways Ozempic lowers glucose levels and reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications.1. Stimulates Insulin ReleaseOzempic increases insulin secretion from the pancreas only when blood sugar is elevated, helping to lower glucose levels after meals. This glucose-dependent action means a lower risk of hypoglycaemia compared with some diabetes medications, such as insulin, which work regardless of your current blood sugar levels.2. Reduces Glucagon SecretionThe active ingredient in Ozempic, semaglutide, also suppresses glucagon, a hormone that signals to the liver to release stored sugar. By reducing glucagon levels, Ozempic stops excess glucagon from entering the bloodstream between meals.3. Slows Gastric EmptyingOzempic slows the rate at which the stomach empties its contents into the gut, blunting spikes in post-meal blood sugar. This delayed digestion also contributes to a sense of fullness, which can support healthier eating habits and weight loss.4. Improves Beta Cell FunctionClinical trials have shown that semaglutide improves pancreatic beta-cell function, enhances insulin secretion, and reduces insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes. Recent animal studies have shown that semaglutide can combat beta-cell dysfunction and modulate the gut microbiome, with broader health benefits. How Ozempic Works: Frequently Asked QuestionsChoosing the right medication to manage your type 2 diabetes or to support your weight loss journey is imperative. However, understanding how Ozempic works and if it works with you will require some knowledge and understanding. That’s why we answer some of the most commonly asked questions about Ozempic. How Long Does it Take for Ozempic to Work?Ozempic typically begins to regulate blood sugar and reduce appetite within the first week of treatment, but it may take several weeks to notice the full benefits. Most people notice improvements in blood sugar or weight after 8 to 12 weeks of Ozempic use, but results can vary.  How Does the Ozempic Pen Work? The Ozempic pen is a pre-filled, once-weekly injection device. After attaching a new needle, check the flow, select your dose, and inject it into your thigh, stomach, or upper arm. Once you have injected the medication, you’ll need to carefully remove the needle and dispose of it in your sharps bin.Ozempic is not recommended for weight loss. Instead, our ‘how to use the Wegovy pen’ guide may be more useful if you are using semaglutide to help you lose weight.  Why Does Ozempic Not Work for Me?For diabetes, suboptimal response may relate to insufficient dose titration, inconsistent use, advanced beta-cell dysfunction, or lifestyle factors such as high carbohydrate intake and low physical activity. Your clinician may adjust the dose or combine treatment with other glucose-lowering medicines.Ozempic is not approved for weight loss in the UK. If weight reduction is your goal, licensed options such as Wegovy or Mounjaro are typically more effective when combined with dietary and behavioural support. How to Make Ozempic Work Best? For the best results in type 2 diabetes, inject Ozempic on the same day each week, follow the dose-escalation guidance, and combine treatment with a balanced diet, a weight-management plan, and regular physical activity. Monitoring HbA1c and reviewing progress with your clinician is essential. If you’re looking to lose weight, speak with a clinician about switching to a licensed weight-loss medication, such as Wegovy, and use our resources, including ‘5 ways to improve weight loss with Wegovy’, for the most up-to-date, practical lifestyle strategies to enhance your results. Is Ozempic Insulin? No. Ozempic is not insulin. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the action of the digestive hormone GLP-1. It stimulates insulin release only when blood glucose is elevated and suppresses glucagon, helping to lower blood sugar and reduce the risk of hypoglycaemia compared with insulin alone.Does Ozempic Affect Fertility? There is not enough data to confirm whether semaglutide affects fertility in men or women. However, some research suggests that GLP-1 medications may have a positive effect on fertility. For example, its use in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has resulted in regular periods and balanced hormones, factors which can impact a woman’s chances of getting pregnant.  Continued Support Throughout Your JourneyIf you’re eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, but not noticing much weight loss, a medically supervised programme may be a solution. Ozempic Vs Wegovy Differences

If you’re thinking about weight loss treatments, the chances are you’ve already encountered Ozempic and Wegovy. These two medications share several similarities, but is Wegovy the same as Ozempic? Both contain the active ingredient, semaglutide, but there are key differences that may affect your choice, their intended use being one of them.In this article, we’ll explore Wegovy vs. Ozempic to highlight the key similarities and differences, compare their features, and determine which option might be the right choice for you.   [medical_form product_id="380" text="START YOUR WEGOVY CONSULTATION TODAY" type="button"] What are Ozempic and Wegovy?Ozempic and Wegovy are different brand names for the same drug, semaglutide. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist that controls appetite, slows stomach emptying, and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Ozempic is only licensed for managing type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is specifically intended for weight loss in obese and overweight adults who have at least one weight-related health condition.Although they share the same active ingredient, the two treatments differ in their usage, dosage, and approval statuses. We will explore these similarities and differences between Wegovy and Ozempic in more detail in the next sections. What is the Difference Between Wegovy and Ozempic?Despite their similarities, there are key differences to consider when choosing between Wegovy and Ozempic. They are:Use: Wegovy is approved for weight loss, while Ozempic is only licensed to manage type 2 diabetes. Titration period: Because there are more Wegovy doses than Ozempic, the period to reach the highest dose is typically longer.Eligibility: To be eligible for Ozempic, you must be at least 18 years old and have poorly managed type 2 diabetes. For Wegovy, you must meet specific body mass index (BMI) criteria. For more information on the differences between Wegovy and Ozempic, please refer to this article. Similarities Between Wegovy and OzempicDespite their differences, Wegovy and Ozempic also share some similarities, such as being derived from the same active ingredient and attaching to the same receptors to initiate their effects. If you’re considering either of these treatments, it’s important to understand their likenesses as well as their differences to make the right choice. Here are some ways in which Wegovy is the same as Ozempic:Active IngredientBoth medications contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by mimicking the natural hormone, GLP-1, to regulate blood glucose levels, control appetite, and slow stomach emptying. By targeting these mechanisms, semaglutide can effectively help people manage their weight and control type 2 diabetes.AdministrationOzempic and Wegovy are self-injectable medications used once a week. This not only makes them convenient, especially for people who prefer to avoid daily weight loss injections or pills, but also ensures a steady release of the active ingredient over time, contributing to their overall effectiveness. The ease of a once-weekly injection promotes better adherence and simplifies the overall treatment routine.   {add_product_block(380)} Side EffectsAnother way that Wegovy is the same as Ozempic lies in their side effects. Since both medications share the same active ingredient, they have a similar side effect profile. The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal issues. These are usually temporary and subside over time as your body adjusts to the new medication. However, some people may experience more persistent symptoms, so it is important to monitor your response to the treatment and consult your clinician if needed.Starting DoseAlthough the Wegovy dosing schedule differs from that of Ozempic, both begin with the same lowest strength of 0.25 mg per week for 4 weeks. This lower starting dose helps your body gradually adapt to the active ingredient, thereby reducing the risk of side effects. For both treatments, the dose typically increases after a few weeks. Wegovy reaches a maximum dose of 7.2 mg for weight loss, and Ozempic increases to a maximum of 2 mg per week for diabetes management. Prescription-OnlyYou will need a prescription from a clinician when requesting Wegovy or Ozempic. This means that a clinician will need to assess your medical history, current health conditions, and treatment goals before prescribing either medication to ensure it is safe, suitable, and tailored to your individual needs.ManufacturerOzempic and Wegovy are both made by the same company, Novo Nordisk. Because of this, they share similar research and development foundations, ensuring consistent quality and efficacy. Novo Nordisk’s reputation in the field of diabetes and weight management further strengthens the trust in both products. How Effective are Ozempic and Wegovy for Weight Loss? Both Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide and can be effective for weight loss; however, Wegovy is the preferred treatment because it is specifically licensed for this purpose and is available in higher doses. Although Ozempic may help people with type 2 diabetes transition to a better body composition, it isn’t licensed in the UK for weight management purposes.Long-term clinical trial data have shown that after 104 weeks on the 2.4 mg dose of Wegovy, patients maintained an average weight loss of 15.2%, compared to 2.6% with a placebo. Just over 77% of the Wegovy group lost at least 5% of their initial body weight compared to 34% in the placebo group. In comparison, after 40 weeks on the highest dose of Ozempic (2mg), the average weight loss was 6.9 kg, compared to 6.0 kg on the lower 1mg dose.  What Weight Loss Alternatives Are Available? If you feel that Wegovy is not a suitable option for you, several alternative weight loss treatments are available, including other injectable and oral medications. Some work by suppressing your appetite, similar to semaglutide, while others can reduce the amount of fat absorbed from your diet.Let’s explore some of the other options that you might want to consider when starting your weight loss journey.  Weight Loss InjectionsWegovy isn’t the only injection available in the UK that is approved for weight loss. Alternatives such as Mounjaro and Nevolat also exist, and they can be good alternatives for anyone who may not tolerate semaglutide well.MounjaroMounjaro contains the active ingredient tirzepatide and is a dual-action agonist, as it binds not only to GLP-1 receptors but also to those for gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP). By mimicking the effects of these two important digestive hormones, Mounjaro’s effectiveness for weight loss is enhanced. At its highest weekly dose of 15 mg, tirzepatide can induce an average weight loss of 22.5% over 72 weeks. In addition to being approved for weight management, it can also be prescribed to help regulate blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.NevolatNevolat is a generic form of liraglutide, previously available under the brand name Saxenda. Like Wegovy, liraglutide is a GLP-1 agonist but is administered as a daily injection rather than a weekly one. The average weight loss with liraglutide is 8% over 56 weeks at the highest strength of 3 mg per day compared to 2.6% when given a placebo.  Weight Loss TabletsIf you’re not keen on the idea of injecting yourself, have a fear of needles, or cannot tolerate the active ingredients in injections, weight loss tablets can be a suitable alternative. At Prescription Doctor, we can provide:Orlistat: Also available under the brand name Xenical, orlistat is a fat absorption-blocking pill that can be taken up to three times a day with meals containing some dietary fat. Each pill contains 120mg of the active ingredient and can block up to 30% of the total amount of fat you eat every day from being absorbed into the body. Instead, it passes through the body and is excreted in faeces, resulting in 37% of people losing at least 5% of their starting body weight over 12 weeks. Alli: An over-the-counter version of orlistat, available in a lower 60 mg dose. Alli can be bought without a prescription and works in the same way as Xenical. Mysimba: Containing a combination of naltrexone and bupropion, Mysimba is an appetite suppressant that acts on the areas of the brain responsible for controlling your appetite. It’s thought to work by signalling to your brain when you feel full, reducing hunger and curbing cravings. What is the Best Weight Loss Treatment For Me?Choosing the right treatment for you will depend on your overall health goals, underlying conditions, and how well your body responds and tolerates the active ingredients in weight loss medications. It will also depend on whether you meet the eligibility criteria required for your specific choice and whether you would prefer injections or oral pills. At Prescription Doctor, we offer a range of weight loss treatments, allowing you to select the one that best suits your needs and preferences. Is Wegovy the Same as Ozempic? Frequently Asked QuestionsSince these two brands contain the same active ingredient, they share similarities but also differ in various ways, which can raise a few questions when exploring the most appropriate treatment, especially if you’re still undecided about which option is best for you.By now, you should know the answer to the common query, ‘Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?’, but you may now be keen to find out if you can switch medications or if you can get them on the NHS. Continue reading as we address some of the most common questions about Wegovy and Ozempic. Are Ozempic and Wegovy Available on the NHS?Yes, but Ozempic is only prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes on the NHS, while Wegovy is a weight loss medication. You will need to meet strict eligibility criteria for either treatment and be referred to a specific weight management service to obtain Wegovy, as your GP cannot prescribe it.Because access to Wegovy on the NHS is limited due to high demand, obtaining a private prescription from a provider like Prescription Doctor may be better if you’re looking to start your weight loss journey imminently. Are Wegovy and Ozempic Interchangeable? No, Wegovy and Ozempic are not meant to be used interchangeably. They are both licensed for different purposes, so you should only take the medication that is appropriate for your condition (Wegovy for weight loss and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes). Are Wegovy and Ozempic the Same Drug? Although Wegovy and Ozempic share the same active ingredient, they cannot be considered the same drug. Each has its unique characteristics, such as usage and dosage schedules, so it’s essential not to confuse or administer them for any purpose other than their intended use.    {add_product_block(380)} Do Wegovy and Ozempic Have the Same Ingredients?Yes, both Wegovy and Ozempic have the same ingredients. In addition to semaglutide, both medications contain disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, and sodium hydroxide, which is used for pH adjustment. The final ingredient is water, which is intended to facilitate the injection process. Do Wegovy and Ozempic Work the Same?Yes, the fact that Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient means they work in exactly the same way. However, the different characteristics and licenses mean they should not be taken for the same purpose or interchangeably. Wegovy should only be administered for weight loss, and Ozempic should only be used for diabetes management. Reliable Weight Loss Solutions from Prescription DoctorSo, is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?
