If you choose to inject into your leg, pick a spot on the front or outer part of your upper thigh. How to Choose Your Wegovy Injection Site

You can inject Wegovy into the same body part every week, but you must rotate your injection sites. Repeatedly injecting Wegovy in the same place can increase your risk of skin reactions and tissue trauma (like lipohypertrophy, the formation of fatty lumps under the skin). Therefore, you should always choose a spot at least 5 cm from where you last injected Wegovy.

Choose a patch of clear, healthy skin for your injection, avoiding tender, red, hard, or bruised areas, stretch marks, and scars. If you are injecting Wegovy into your stomach, pick a spot at least 5 cm from your belly button.

You should always inject Wegovy into fat tissue, and never into a muscle or vein. This is because the body absorbs drugs at different rates, depending on how they are administered. Intravenous injections result in rapid absorption, whereas drugs injected into fat tissue are released to the bloodstream more slowly. For this reason, you should always inject into one of the clinically recommended areas (upper arms, upper thighs, or stomach).

Wegovy Injection Sites: Reactions and Side Effects

Injection site reactions are uncommon (around 3-5%) in clinical trial data, but they are listed as a common side effect in the Patient Information Leaflet. Reactions are generally mild and may produce symptoms such as itching, redness, inflammation, irritation, and hardening and thickening of the affected skin. More rarely, Wegovy injections can cause neurological symptoms such as burning, tingling, prickling, pain, or skin sensitivity.

A very small percentage of Wegovy users (0.036%) may experience an extreme allergic reaction to the medication, known as anaphylaxis. This is a medical emergency, and you should call 999 if you experience any of the following symptoms after injecting Wegovy:

• Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
• Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
• Tightness in the throat or difficulty swallowing
• Skin, lips, or tongue turning blue, grey, or pale
• Sudden confusion, drowsiness, or dizziness

Most injection site reactions fade within a few days and can be managed with weekly rotation of your injection site. If you have a reaction that is particularly uncomfortable or doesn’t resolve by itself, consult a licensed clinician for advice.

How to Ensure Wegovy is Used Safely

The safest way to use Wegovy is according to the official clinical recommendations for this product. Wegovy is designed for self-injection, and familiarising yourself with this process is key to using the medication effectively.

Before injecting Wegovy, perform the following checks to confirm the medicine is safe to use:

• Make sure the name and dosage on the pen match your prescription.
• Examine the fluid inside the pen; it should be clear and colourless. Do not use Wegovy that is cloudy, discoloured, frozen, or contains solid particles.
• Examine paper tabs and outer needle caps for damage before fitting a new needle to your pen.

Once you have chosen your injection site and attached a new needle to your pen, you can administer the medicine by following these steps:

1. Check the Flow: You need to check the flow of every Wegovy pen before using it for the first time. To do this, you need to first remove both needle caps, setting the outer cap aside for later. Next, hold the pen upright and press the dose button until the dose counter reads -0-. If you see a drop of Wegovy appear at the tip of the needle, your pen is ready to use.
2. Set Your Dose: Turn the dose counter dial until your prescribed dose appears in the dosing window and aligns with the pointer.
3. Inject the Medication: Insert the needle into your chosen injection site. Next, press and hold the dose button until a -0- appears in the dosing window. You may hear or feel a click when this happens. Keep pressing the dose button with the needle still in your skin and slowly count to 6 to ensure you receive the full dose. 
4. Remove the Needle: Once the injection is complete, remove the needle from your skin and replace the outer cap. Unscrew the needle from the pen and dispose of it in a designated sharps container.

Here, we’ll discuss some of the most common queries surrounding Wegovy injections, skin reactions, and what to do about bruises, lumps, and bleeding.

Why Does My Wegovy Injection Site Hurt?

You may be more likely to experience injection site pain if you administer Wegovy in your thigh, which is more sensitive than the stomach and arms. Other possible causes of pain include irritation from the needle puncture, a mild reaction to the medicine’s formulation, or not rotating the injection site weekly.

Injection site pain is a common side effect of Wegovy. Although around 80% of Wegovy users report no pain or very mild pain when using Wegovy, others report mild-to-moderate pain at their injection site. Most injection site reactions resolve within a few days, but you should consult a doctor if you experience severe or persistent pain.

Why is there a Lump at the Wegovy Injection Site?

Raised, red, or itchy bumps are a common reaction at the injection site, often caused by a mild immune response to the medication. Lumps can also result from medication temporarily pooling under the skin. These reactions are usually mild and resolve on their own within a few days.

However, for some people, hard lumps called nodules may form under the skin of their injection site. These may result from lipohypertrophy, in which fat, protein, and scar tissue build up under the skin. Lipohypertrophy is uncommon among people who use Wegovy, but it can happen if you inject the same place every week.

Wegovy Leaked Out of the Injection Site. What Do I Do?

If Wegovy leaks out of your injection site, this may be a sign that you removed the needle from your skin too soon. Losing a small amount of Wegovy is unlikely to affect the medication's efficacy. However, if fluid streams from the needle after you remove it, this could suggest that you have not received the full dose.

If Wegovy leaks from your injection site, do not repeat the dose. This will probably mean taking more Wegovy than you should, which could increase your risk of severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Instead, use a cotton ball to apply gentle pressure to your injection site for 5-10 seconds until the leaking stops. 

Why is My Wegovy Injection Site Bruised?

Injection site bruising is a common, but generally harmless, side effect of injecting medication. When you insert a needle into your skin, it can disrupt blood vessels beneath the surface, leading to bleeding that may appear as a bruise. Several factors can increase the likelihood of injection site bruising, including:

• The concentration of blood vessels at the injection site
• How constricted or dilated the blood vessels are at the time of injection
• The size of the blood vessels disrupted by the needle
• Blood clotting issues caused by genetics, other medical conditions, or medications
• Older age
• Higher BMI

In most cases, Wegovy bruises will resolve on their own. However, you should always consult a medical professional about severe bruising, painful bruising, bruises accompanied by symptoms of infection, or bruises that don’t go away within a few weeks.

There is no ‘best’ injection site for preventing side effects with Wegovy, as the medication works the same whether injected into the arm, thigh, or stomach. Injection site reactions and bruising can occur at any body site, and individual experiences may vary. I’m Bleeding at the Wegovy Injection Site. What Happens?

Minor bleeding at your Wegovy injection site is nothing to worry about and usually happens when the needle nicks a small blood vessel (called a capillary).
