What Is CosmoCol?

CosmoCol is a laxative medication that is used to treat constipation. It is especially useful for those who have been constipated for a long time.

Those who suffer from faecal impaction – long term constipation that has led to a blockage within the colon or rectum due to the large amount of stools – will also find CosmoCol to be helpful.

Constipation is a common affliction. While it is more common in women - especially during pregnancy - and the elderly, it can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons.

Common causes of constipation include:

  • A low fibre diet
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Medicine (such as opioids)
  • Lack of exercise
  • Pregnancy
  • Ignoring the urge to go to the toilet

Usually, making a change to your diet or lifestyle can help you overcome your constipation. However, if dietary changes have not worked effectively, you may consider laxatives such as CosmoCol.

Before taking any laxatives, it's important to speak to your doctor or a pharmacist to find the most suitable laxative for you. Your doctor or pharmacist will be able to inform you which laxatives are safe and how to take them to relieve your condition.

Laxatives should be used for a short term. If you find that you need to use laxatives regularly, or if laxatives have been ineffective at treating your condition, speak to your doctor.

Where Can I Buy CosmoCol?

You can buy CosmoCol over the counter in the UK from your local pharmacy. If popping down to the pharmacy is inconvenient for you, you can guy CosmoCol online from reputable online pharmacies such as Prescription Doctor.

When you buy CosmoCol online from Prescription Doctor, our pharmacy will package your item in discreet, plain, tamper-proof packaging to ensure your privacy. If your order is approved before 3pm on weekdays, your item will be dispatched the same day for a next-day delivery.

How Does CosmoCol Work?

CosmoCol works by softening the faeces that has been difficult to pass. This should offer relief from constipation as it makes the stools more easily passable.

Due to the electrolytes within this medication, patients taking CosmoCol should not become dehydrated or unwell when using it. If you do feel unwell, you must seek urgent medical assistance.

How Do I Take CosmoCol?

Always take CosmoCol on the instructions of a pharmacist or doctor. CosmoCol comes in sachets and is taken as a drinkable mixture that you need to make up yourself.

Empty one sachet of CosmoCol into a glass and add 125ml of water.

Stir the mixture until the powder has entirely dissolved. Remember, it may take up to two minutes for the powder to completely dissolve, and you should always wait until it has.

Once the powder has dissolved, drink the mixture.

The recommended dose is no more than three sachets in any 24-hour period. CosmoCol can be taken with or without food.

CosmoCol is available in 3 flavours: plain, orange, and lemon & lime.

CosmoCol Side Effects and Cautions

Before you take CosmoCol, it's important to read the patient information leaflet. This leaflet contains instructions on how to store and use CosmoCol, as well as critical information about the safety of the medicine, such as side effects and contraindications.

If you have any doubts about anything in the leaflet, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist for advice.

If you experience an allergic reaction after taking CosmoCol, top taking the medicine immediately. Seek urgent medical attention by going straight to the nearest accident and emergency department. • Raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, eyes or face

Other safety information

Always speak to your doctor before you buy CosmoCol online from Prescription Doctor.

Please inform our medical team of all medicines you are currently taking, including those prescribed by your doctor, or bought over the counter, as well as health and herbal supplements.

While taking laxatives, it's important to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water. You should try to drink between 6 to 8 glasses of water throughout the day.

Do not take CosmoCol past the expiry date printed on the packaging. The date refers to the last day of the specified month. For example, "EXP: 03/2025" means the 31st of March 2025.

Never throw away medicines via household or water waste. Take any unwanted or expired medicine to your local pharmacy and ask them dispose of it safely on your behalf.

Always store CosmoCol out of sight and reach from children and pets.

Never share your medicine with anybody else, even if they are experiencing the same symptoms or have the same condition as you.
