What is Dioctyl?

Dioctyl contains docusate sodium, which belongs to a group of medicines called stimulant laxatives. You can buy Dioctyl as 100mg capsules from our online pharmacy.

Dioctyl is used to prevent and treat chronic constipation by softening the stool and making it easier to pass. Your doctor may also give it to empty the bowel before an abdominal X-ray.

Before taking laxatives for constipation, it's important to try making adjustments to your diet and lifestyle first.

  • Eat more fibre
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid putting off going to the toilet

If you have made changes your diet or lifestyle, but your constipation symptoms prevail, you should speak to your pharmacist for advice on which treatments are suitable for you.

Your doctor or pharmacist can inform you of the laxatives which are safe for you, based on your medical history, and advise you on how to take them.

Laxatives are not a long-term solution for constipation and should only be used for the short term. If you feel you need to use laxatives regularly to relieve constipation, arrange an appointment to speak to your GP.

Buy Dioctyl online

If you don't have time to visit your pharmacy to buy Dioctyl capsules, you can buy Dioctyl from an online pharmacy such as Prescription Doctor. Our fast and discreet delivery service makes it easy and convenient for you to order Dioctyl online.

If your order is approved before 3pm on weekdays, our UK based pharmacy will dispatch your item the same day via a next-day delivery.

How does Dioctyl work?

The active ingredient docusate sodium in Dioctyl capsules works in two ways. It reduces the surface tension of hard stools that accumulate in the intestine by causing water and fats to penetrate them and make the stools softer and easier to pass. The use of Dioctyl can be particularly helpful for people with piles or an anal fissure (a tear in the lining of the anus).

Docusate sodium also stimulates the nerve endings in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. This action causes increased and stronger contractions of the smooth muscles present in the walls of the large intestine. These contractions move the stools along and empty the bowels.

This dual-action helps relieve constipation without straining.

How do I take Dioctyl?

Dioctyl capsules are suitable for adults and adolescents (above the age of 12 years). The starting dose is three capsules, one at a time at regular intervals throughout the day.

If the symptoms do not improve, you can increase the dose up to five capsules per day. Do not take more than five capsules per day.

Take the capsule whole with a glass of water and do not chew it.

As your condition improves, you should gradually reduce your dosage.

The dose before an abdominal X-ray is four capsules taken as a single dose according to the doctor's guidelines.

Always take Dioctyl capsules as described in the leaflet or ask your doctor or pharmacist, if you have any questions.

Dioctyl side effects and cautions

Before taking Dioctyl, it's important to read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine. This leaflet explains how to take and store your medicine, as well as provide important information regarding the safety of Dioctyl.

You can view the patient information leaflet for Dioctyl online here.

If you are concerned about anything contained within the leaflet, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist for advice.

Before you start taking Dioctyl

Dioctyl is not suitable for everyone.

Do not take Dioctyl if you:

  • are allergic to docusate sodium or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
  • are suffering from stomach pains
  • are feeling sick, or have been sick in the last 24 hours
  • have a blocked bowel (intestinal obstruction)
  • have been told you are unable to take a sugar called fructose. Dioctyl contains sorbitol and is therefore unsuitable for you

If you are unsure whether it is safe for you to take Dioctyl, speak to your doctor first.

Side effects

All medicines carry the potential of causing side effects, though not every taking Dioctyl experiences them. Nonetheless, it is important to be aware of the side effects and look out for any side effects which may arise during your course of treatment with Dioctyl.

If any of the following side effects occur, stop taking Dioctyl and speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps

Unkown frequency (frequency cannot be determined from the available data):

  • Itching
  • Skin rash

This not an exhaustive list of side effects. Further information regarding the safety of Dioctyl can be found within the patient information leaflet enclosed with your medicine.

If you experience any side effects, regardless of whether they are listed above or in the patient information leaflet, inform your doctor or speak to a pharmacist for advice.

Allergies

Do not take Dioctyl if you are allergic to docusate sodium or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.

Dioctyl contains sorbitol, sunset yellow (E110) and propylene glycol.

If you experience an allergic reaction after taking Dioctyl, stop taking Dioctyl and seek urgent medical attention by going straight to the accident and emergency department of your nearest hospital. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining medicine with you so that doctors know exactly what you have taken.

Signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • Chest tightening
  • Dry, red and cracked skin
  • Itchy, red watery eyes
  • Raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, eyes or face
  • Tummy pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Wheezing

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before taking Dioctyl.

The safety of Dioctyl during pregnancy has not been determined.

Docusate sodium is excreted in breast milk and so should be used with caution in breastfeeding women.

Other safety information

Always speak to your doctor before you buy Dioctyl online from Prescription Doctor's online pharmacy.

Please inform our medical team of all medicines you are currently taking, including those prescribed by your doctor, or bought over the counter, as well as health and herbal supplements.

While taking Dioctyl, it is very important to increase your intake of fluid to prevent you from becoming dehydrated. You should try to drink around 6 to 8 glasses of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

Do not take Dioctyl past the expiry date printed on the packaging. The date refers to the last day of the specified month. For example, "EXP: 03/2025" refers to the 31st of March 2025.

Never throw away medicine via household or water waste. Take any unwanted or expired medicine to your local pharmacy and ask them to dispose of it safely on your behalf.

Always store medicine out of sight and reach from children and pets.

Never share your medicine with anybody else, even if they are experiencing the same symptoms or have the same condition as you.
