Cialis (Tadalafil) For Erectile Dysfunction

Cialis is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction in men that is marketed by Lilly.

This treatment contains a phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) inhibitor called tadalafil. It is available in strengths of 10mg or 20mg, and comes in packs of 4 tablets.

Unlike other erectile dysfunction treatments - that are typically only effective for around 4 hours - Cialis makes it easier for you to get an erection for up to 36 hours. However, this does not mean that you will get an erection that lasts for 36 hours.

Given its long-acting property, Cialis was dubbed "the weekend pill" when it was launched in the UK in 2003.

In 2017, the patent was lifted on the drug and more affordable generic variations became available.

Generic Cialis (Tadalafil)

Our online pharmacy offers both Cialis, branded by Lilly, and generic Cialis in the form of Tadalafil tablets.

Both Cialis and generic Tadalafil are available in 10mg or 20mg tablets.

Generic medicines are more affordable options than their branded counterparts while containing the same active ingredient and working in a similar way.

While the active ingredient might be the same, there may be ingredients that you are allergic to in either Cialis or generic tadalafil tablets. If you are unsure, read the list of ingredients located in the patient information leaflet supplied with your treatment.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is when a man struggles to achieve or maintain an erection. While the condition can be embarrassing, it's relatively common for men to experience erectile dysfunction from time to time. However, if you experience erectile dysfunction regularly, it is important to speak to your doctor about it.

The causes of erectile dysfunction vary between men. For some, their condition could be caused by an underlying health condition, taking a specific medicine or psychological issues such as stress, anxiety or depression. Therefore, it is very important to speak to your doctor if you are experiencing erectile dysfunction, as it could be the sign of an undiagnosed condition that may require treatment.

If you find erectile dysfunction listed as a side effect in the patient information leaflet of another medicine prescribed by your doctor, you should not stop taking the medicine. Instead, inform your doctor of the side effect. Your doctor will be able to provide appropriate advice on how to manage your side effect or may review your medication if it is causing you particular distress.

Sexual stimulation causes tissues in the penis to release a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which causes the blood vessels to dilate. This increases blood flow to the two cylindrical chambers in the penis, called corpora cavernosa, resulting in an erection.

According to a study, 43% of men aged between 18-60 have experienced some form of erectile dysfunction. This does not mean they suffer from the condition. Those that need treatment for erectile dysfunction have often tried other solutions such as weight loss, therapy, or lifestyle changes with no success.

If you have tried cutting out alcohol, changing medications and improving your fitness, while decreasing your stress levels but still have erectile dysfunction, you may benefit from Cialis.

PDE5 inhibitors, such as Cialis, block an enzyme from destroying cGMP. As a result, the blood vessels remain dilated for longer, resulting in a longer-lasting and firmer erection due to the increased blood flow.

Does Cialis make you last longer in bed?

While Cialis can help you achieve and maintain an erection for longer, it does not increase your time to ejaculation or help you last longer in bed. If you are suffering from premature ejaculation, speak to your doctor.

Warning: You should never take erectile dysfunction treatments and premature ejaculation treatments together.

Would Cialis improve my libido (sex drive)?

Cialis is not an aphrodisiac and does not increase sexual desire. In order for Cialis to work properly, sexual stimulation is required.

If you have noticed a change in your sex drive (libido), speak to your doctor.

How to take Cialis (Tadalafil)?

You should take 1 Cialis tablet 30 minutes before you anticipate sexual intercourse for the best result.

The effects of Cialis (Tadalafil) may last for up to 36 hours, enabling erections to occur for approximately 1 and a half days.

Cialis can be taken with or without food. For the best result, you should avoid eating large meals or foods high in saturated fat before taking Cialis.

Cialis tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.

Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking Cialis. This is because grapefruit juice may increase your risk of side effects with Cialis.

Do not crush, chew or dissolve the tablet in water. If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, speak to your doctor about alternative erectile dysfunction treatments.

Do not take more than 1 Cialis tablet in any 24-hour period. If you accidentally take more Cialis than you should, inform your doctor right away.

If you are not sure how to take Cialis, speak to your doctor or ask a pharmacist. You should always take Cialis as prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effects and cautions of Cialis

Before you take Cialis, it's important to be aware of the risks associated with your medicine. If you are unsure about any of the risks associated with your treatment, speak to your doctor or ask a pharmacist for advice.

You can become aware of the side effects by reading the accompanying patient information leaflet which comes with your prescribed medication.

Alternatively, you can read the patient information leaflet for Cialis (tadalafil) online.

Who should not take Cialis (Tadalafil)?

Cialis (Tadalafil) is not suitable for every man. If you are unsure whether Cialis is safe for you, speak to your doctor.

Do not take Cialis if you:

  • are allergic to tadalafil or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
  • are taking any nitrates such as amyl nitrate
  • have serious heart disease or recently had a heart attack within the last 90 days
  • recently had a stroke within the last 6 months
  • have low or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • have ever experienced a loss of vision due to non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), sometimes referred to as "stroke of the eye"
  • are taking riociguat

During your online consultation with Prescription Doctor, it is important to inform our doctor of all medication you are currently taking, including those prescribed by your doctor or bought over the counter from your local pharmacy, including health and herbal supplements.

Side effects of Cialis (Tadalafil)

All medications carry the risk of side effects, though not everybody experiences them. Understanding the risks associated with your medication is an important part of your treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Side effects of Cialis (Tadalafil) may include:

  • Back or chest pain
  • Digestion problems
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Increased heartbeat
  • Skin problems
  • Vision problems

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. For more information regarding the safety of this medication, we encourage you to read the patient information leaflet enclosed within the packaging.

If you experience any side effects, whether they are listed above or in the patient information leaflet, speak to your doctor or call 111 for advice.

If you experience an erection that persists for more than 4 hours, seek emergency medical attention by going straight to your nearest A&E department. Prolonged erections (also known as priapism) can cause serious damage to the penile tissue.

Preventing your risk of side effects with Cialis

Some side effects, such as dizziness and headaches, are caused by a drop in blood pressure and may occur when getting up quickly from a sitting or lying position. Getting up slowly can prevent feelings of dizziness and headaches.

Taking Cialis with food may reduce digestive problems.

Allergies

Do not take Cialis if you are allergic to tadalafil or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet enclosed with your medicine.

Cialis contains lactose. If you have been informed that you are sensitive to some sugars, speak to your doctor before taking Cialis.

If you experience the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, stop taking Cialis and seek emergency medical attention by going straight to your nearest accident and emergency department. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining medicine with you so doctors know exactly what you have taken.

Signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • Chest tightening
  • Dry, red and cracked skin
  • Itchy, red watery eyes
  • Raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, eyes or face
  • Tummy pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Wheezing

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Cialis is not intended for women.

Other safety information

Always read the patient information leaflet enclosed with your treatment before taking Cialis.

Do not take Cialis past the expiry date printed on the packaging. The date refers to the last day of the specified month.

Never throw away medicine via household or water waste. Take any unwanted or expired medication to your local pharmacy and ask them to dispose of them safely on your behalf.

Always store medicine out of sight and reach from children and pets.

Never share your medicine with anybody else, even if they are experiencing the same symptoms as you or have been diagnosed with the same condition as you.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I take more Cialis than I should?

If you accidentally take more Cialis than you should, inform your doctor. Taking too much Cialis may increase your risk of side effects.

Will Cialis affect my ability to drive or operate machinery?

Cialis may cause dizziness, lightheadedness or visual disturbances. If you experience any such adverse events, refrain from driving or operating machinery until it is safe for you to do so.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Cialis?

You should avoid or limit your alcohol consumption before taking Cialis. Alcohol may affect your ability to achieve an erection and temporarily lower your blood pressure, increasing your risk of certain side effects.

Does grapefruit interfere with Cialis?

Grapefruit does interfere with Cialis. You should refrain from drinking grapefruit juice while taking Cialis. Speak to your doctor for further advice.

Will Cialis affect my fertility?

While there have been reports of a reduction in sperm in some men who took Cialis, it is unlikely to cause infertility. If you have any concerns about fertility, speak to your doctor.

What is the difference between Cialis and Tadalafil?

Cialis is the brand name for Tadalafil. Both treatments contain the same active ingredient and work in the same way.

However, Tadalafil (generic Cialis) is more affordable than Cialis.

How long does Cialis take to work?

Cialis (Tadalafil) usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour to start working.

It's important to note that it may take longer for Cialis to work if you take it after a heavy meal.

Remember: Cialis does not cause an immediate erection - it only makes it easier for an erection to occur when stimulated.

How long does Cialis last?

The effects of Cialis can last for up to 36 hours after taking the tablet.

Cialis only facilitates an erection and does not spontaneously cause one to occur. Sexual stimulation will still be required.

Moreover, while Cialis will let you achieve an erection for up to 36 hours after taking it, Cialis does not cause an erection that lasts 38 hours.

If you experience an erection lasting longer than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention.

Does Cialis work for men with low testosterone?

If you have low testosterone and are suffering from erectile dysfunction, it is best to speak to your doctor in person to ensure that Cialis is safe to take during a concurrent course of testosterone gel or injections.

Is Cialis available over the counter?

Cialis is only available on prescription and cannot be bought over the counter. To order Cialis online, you will need to complete a consultation with an online doctor. After completing an online consultation, our doctor can issue a prescription for Cialis online.

What should I do if Cialis doesn't work for me?

If you find that Cialis is not effective for you, speak to your doctor. If Cialis does not work as well as it did previously, it may be a sign of an underlying health condition worsening. Speak to your doctor if you notice any changes in your body's response to Cialis.

Can Viagra and Cialis be taken together?

You should not take Viagra and Cialis together. Taking two erectile dysfunctions together can cause serious and life-threatening complications such as a dangerous drop in blood pressure and long-lasting painful erections (priapism). If you are unsure which treatment is most suitable for you, speak to your doctor or ask a pharmacist for advice.

How many Cialis can I take in a day?

You should not take more than 1 Cialis tablet in any 24-hour period. If you are unsure how many Cialis tablets to take, ask your doctor.

Because the effects of Cialis can last up to 36 hours, you should avoid taking Cialis on 2 consecutive days. For example, if you take Cialis on Friday, do not take another dose on Saturday.

Which is better: Viagra, Levitra or Cialis?

Viagra, Levitra and Cialis are all treatments for erectile dysfunction which contain a PDE-5 inhibitor. What might work for one man's erectile dysfunction may not work for another's. You should speak to your doctor about your condition in the first instance. Your doctor will be able to assess your condition and prescribe the most suitable treatment for you based on your medical history.

If one treatment doesn't work for you, inform your doctor. They may be able to prescribe an alternative erectile dysfunction treatment that might work better for you. You should never take more of any medication in an attempt to make it work.
