What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection. While it is more common in men over the age of 40, it can happen to men at any age.

Occasional problems with erections are usually not a concern, but frequent problems with erections could indicate an underlying physiological or psychological condition. High blood pressure or cholesterol levels, hormone problems (such as low testosterone) or side effects brought on by other medicines can be the culprit of erectile dysfunction.

Emotional issues, such as stress, anxiety, or depression, are often the cause of most men's erectile problems. For these cases, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), sex therapy or other psychotherapies can help determine the underlying cause of the issue. Problems with erections may not stem from an emotional problem but can cause emotional problems as a result.

Speak to your doctor to determine the cause of your erectile dysfunction so a suitable treatment can be prescribed.

Who can suffer from erectile dysfunction?

Any man can suffer from erectile dysfunction regardless of age, weight or fitness. This is because there are many contributing factors that differ from person to person. No two people are the same which is why we offer a range of erectile dysfunction treatments on prescription.

How does Viagra work?

Viagra's active substance, sildenafil, is known as a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. These medicines help to relax the blood vessels, increasing the blood flow to the penis.

Contrary to popular belief, the penis does not contain any muscle.

When you are aroused, tissues within the penis release a chemical called cyclic guanosine mono-phosphate (cGMP) which causes vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels), increasing blood flow to the cylindrical chambers in the penis (known as corpora cavernosa), producing an erection.

PDE5 inhibitors, such Viagra, prevent the enzyme (phosphodiesterase) from breaking down the cGMP. This results in blood vessels staying dilated for longer, resulting in a longer lasting erection.

Viagra is not an aphrodisiac and will not directly cause an erection. You must be sexually stimulated for Viagra to work.

How do you take Viagra?

On an empty stomach, take one tablet between 1 and 4 hours before having sex. It may take longer to work if you've just eaten a heavy meal. You can expect the effects to last for up to four hours after ingestion.

How long does it take for Viagra to work?

Viagra starts working between 30 and 60 minutes of taking it.

Taking Viagra after a heavy meal may impact the length of time it takes for Viagra to start working.

How long do the effects of Viagra last?

On average, the effects of Viagra can last between 2 and 3 hours before they start to diminish. How long Viagra stays active within your body depends on your dosage, age, metabolism, and other external factors.

How often can you take Viagra?

Your doctor will be able to determine how frequently you can take Viagra, though it's recommended not to take Viagra for more than 12 days per calendar month.

You should not take more than 1 tablet in any 24 hour period. Moreover, you should not take Viagra daily.

You should speak to your doctor for further information on how to take Viagra.

What forms of Viagra are available?

You can buy Viagra online in three strengths, containing 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg of sildenafil, and comes in blister packs which can contain 2, 4, 8, 12 or 24 tablets.

What dose of Viagra should I take?

There are many factors which need to be taken into consideration when prescribing Viagra, including your age, height, weight, as well as the severity of your symptoms.

When you buy Viagra from Prescription Doctor, our online prescribing doctors will be able to determine the most suitable dosage for you based on your questionnaire.

It's important not to exceed the prescribed dose of Viagra.

Staying safe with Prescription Doctor

Your safety is our priority here at Prescription Doctor. We aim to ensure the treatment you choose is right for you. Some medicine can interact with food, drink, and other medications including prescription, over-the-counter and herbal medicine. Please inform our prescriber of the medicine you are taking during your consultation.

Viagra may not be suitable for you. We urge you to speak to your doctor before taking Viagra if you:

  • Are taking nitrates for chest pain
  • Have heart, blood, or circulation problems
  • Have a penile deformity such as scarring, severe curvature or Peyronie's disease
  • Have a stomach ulcer
  • Have kidney or liver problems
  • Are taking other medications for erectile dysfunction

Do not use poppers (amyl nitrate) while taking Viagra as this can be fatal.

While taking Viagra, you should moderate your alcohol consumption. Though alcohol may not directly interfere with the medication, excessive alcohol consumption can make it more difficult to achieve or maintain and erection.

Women should not take Viagra. Keep all medication out of sight and reach of children.

Never take more than the recommended prescribed dose of Viagra.

Side effects of Viagra

All medications carry the risk of side effects, though not everyone will experience them. It is important to read the patient information leaflet enclosed with your treatment before taking Viagra.

Some side effects are a result of increased blood flow and will subside, whereas others may warrant medical intervention.

Possible side effects of Viagra may include:

  • Nausea
  • Hot flushes
  • Digestion problems
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Vision irregularities
  • Dizziness
  • Stuffy nose
  • Sleepiness
  • Increased heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • Awareness of heartbeat (palpitations)

If you notice the symptoms of an allergic reaction after taking Viagra, such as chest pain, rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat, seek emergency medical attention.

If an erection lasts more than 6 consecutive hours, seek emergency medical attention. Prolonged erections can cause permanent, irreversible damage to penile tissue.

If the treatment does not work for you, do not take more of the medication. Speak to your doctor about alternative treatments to Viagra.

If you are at all concerned about the side effects listed above, speak to your GP or a pharmacist for further information.
