Patient Reviews: How Spedra Has Made a Difference

How Does Spedra Work?

Spedra's active ingredient, avanafil, is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor.

During sexual arousal, tissues within the penis release a chemical called cyclic guanosine mono-phosphate (cGMP) which causes vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels), increasing blood flow to the corpora cavernosa - a pair of cylindrical chambers which fill with blood, producing an erection.

PDE5 inhibitors, such as Spedra, prevent the enzyme (phosphodiesterase) from breaking down the cGMP. This results in blood vessels being dilated for longer, resulting in a longer lasting erection.

Spedra is not an aphrodisiac and does not increase your sexual desire. In order for Spedra to work, you must already be sexually aroused.

Spedra is clinically proven to start working in under 20 minutes, making it a faster-acting treatment for erectile dysfunction than Viagra or Levitra. This allows for more spontaneity with your partner. Similarly to Viagra, the effects of Spedra can last for up to 4 hours.

Understanding Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is an umbrella term for when a man has difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. While it's common for men to occasionally have minor erectile trouble, frequent problems with erections could indicate an underlying health condition.

Men over the age of 40 are more susceptible to erectile dysfunction, and it is believed that 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 suffer from erectile dysfunction, but the condition can affect men at any point in their life.

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a physiological or psychological condition. Even if the condition is not caused by a psychological condition, it can cause a man mental distress.

Common causes of erectile problems can include:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Excessive weight
  • Side effects of medicine
  • Smoking

How Do I Take Spedra?

It is best to take Spedra with a full glass of water without food, 30 minutes before intercourse.

Do not take more than ONE tablet in 24 hours.

Taking with food can delay the onset and reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

Side Effects of Spedra

Although Side effects are particularly rare, you may experience some negative effects from taking Spedra. These include:

  • Headaches
  • Facial Flushing
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Dizziness and confusion
  • Possible Blurred vision

Avoid Alcohol  - More than two units of Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects and decreases the onset and effect of Spedra.

Avoid drinking Grapefruit Juice up to 24 hours before taking Spedra.

Spedra can make you feel dizzy or affect your vision. If you notice a change in your alertness, avoid driving, cycling or operating machinery.

Short term and long term use of avanafil has not shown to affect the quality, motility, structure or count of your sperm.

Please also refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for further information to ensure you understand the medication you are taking.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spedra

Is there a herbal treatment for erectile dysfunction?

You may come across a product claiming to be "natural Viagra" or a "herbal Viagra". The unfortunate fact is that such a treatment simply does not exist.

No herbal formulation has ever been proven to be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. Furthermore, such product are not approved or regulated.

"Herbal Viagra" is most likely to be at best a sugar pill (placebo) or at worst a dangerous concoction of herbs which could interact adversely with other medications.

What non-medicinal treatments for erectile dysfunction are there?

There are a number of treatments for erectile dysfunction which do not require taking tablets. You should speak to your doctor about these options to determine if the benefits of such a treatment would outweigh any possible risks.

  • Vacuum pump
  • Psychological treatments
  • Penile implants
  • Pelvic floor muscle exercises

Is it safe to take erectile dysfunction medicine for a long time?

The active ingredient of Spedra, avanafil, has been shown to be safe when taken long term.

In a study conducted by VIVUS, avanafil was shown to be a safe and efficient treatment for men with erectile dysfunction. Side effects were noted in less than 5% on average of the gross number of participants over the course of 52 weeks.

Can I improve my erectile dysfunction through lifestyle changes?

Having a healthy and balanced lifestyle has shown to have a positive effect on erectile dysfunction. Speak to your doctor if you believe any of the following changes might help with your erectile dysfunction:

  • Losing excess weight
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Stopping smoking
  • Reducing stress levels
  • Regularly exercising
  • Improving sleeping patterns

Before making drastic changes to your lifestyle, always speak to a physician.
