Patient Reviews: How Sildenafil (Viagra) Has Made a Difference

Treatment Information

Table of contents:

What is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil tablets are often referred to as generic or cheap Viagra. Both Viagra and Sildenafil contain the same active ingredient.

Viagra is a brand of Sildenafil marketed by Pfizer. However, the active ingredient is available from other manufacturers at a lower price.

Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that works by relaxing the blood vessels, increasing the blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This helps to improve the quality of erections.

During sexual arousal, tissues within the penis release a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) which causes vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels), increasing blood flow to the corpora cavernosa - a pair of cylindrical chambers which fill with blood, producing an erection.

PDE5 inhibitors, such as Sildenafil, stop the enzyme (phosphodiesterase) from degrading the cGMP. These cause blood vessels to stay dilated, resulting in a longer-lasting erection.

The medicine typically starts to work between 30 and 60 minutes after taking it, though the tablet can be taken up to 4 hours before engaging in sexual activity.

At least two-thirds of men who took Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction reported an improvement in erections. Please understand that Sildenafil is not an aphrodisiac and does not cause sexual excitement. Taking a tablet will not instantly cause an erection, but will make it easier for an erection to happen when sexually stimulated.

Warning: You should never take treatments for erectile dysfunction alongside medicines for premature ejaculation.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is a term that broadly covers a wide range of symptoms. It can explain the inability to obtain an erection, the inability to sustain an erection or the inability to climax.

Numerous physiological and psychological issues can cause erectile dysfunction.

Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction include:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

Physiological causes of erectile dysfunction include:

Erectile dysfunction may not affect men all the time. It is possible to experience erections in the morning soon after waking up, but not experience erections during sexual activity. If this is the case, an emotional factor may be at play.

Speak to your doctor about the options available, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), sex therapy or other psychotherapy treatments.

Sufferers of erectile dysfunction experience it differently from one another, which is why there are a variety of treatments for this condition, including different medications and psychologically therapeutic techniques.

What type of erectile dysfunction is Sildenafil suitable for?

Sildenafil is an erectile dysfunction medication that is suitable for those who have trouble obtaining an erection.

Where Cialis and Levitra work by sustaining an erection for someone who is already aroused and sexually stimulated, Sildenafil works similarly to Viagra, in that it increases blood flow to the penis just before sex begins.

How to take Sildenafil?

Take one Sildenafil tablet an hour before having sex. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Sildenafil can be taken with or without food, although it may take longer to work if taken after a heavy meal.

Do not crush or chew the tablet.

The effects of Sildenafil can last for up to four hours.

Do not take more than one Sildenafil tablet in a 24-hour period.

Do not take Sildenafil tablets in combination with Sildenafil orodispersible tablets or any other erectile dysfunction treatment.

Our maximum quantity is 32 tablets, which should last for 3 months. If you find you are using more or need more, please inform our doctor to determine if it is safe for you to do so.

What forms of Sildenafil are available?

Sildenafil has different dosages. Our online doctor will prescribe the most suitable dosage for you, based on the information provided in your medical questionnaire.

Sildenafil is available from our online prescription service in blister packs of 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 and 32 tablets. We offer three strengths: 25mg, 50mg and 100mg.

Our doctor will be able to advise on the most suitable dosage for you, based on a medical questionnaire.

To begin your order, fill out our medical questionnaire, and our online prescriber will determine whether Sildenafil is suitable for you.

Sildenafil oral jelly, also known as Kamagra, is not licensed for use in the UK and is therefore not available through our online prescription service.

If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, speak to your doctor. They may be able to recommend an alternative ED treatment for you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for Sildenafil to work?

Sildenafil starts working between 30 and 60 minutes after taking it. It allows for an erection to occur up to 4 hours after taking it.

How long does Sildenafil last?

The effects of Sildenafil last for approximately 4 hours. This does not mean that an erection will last for 4 hours - it means that within 4 hours of taking Sildenafil, you should be able to achieve an erection more easily.

Is Sildenafil the same as Viagra?

Viagra is a brand of Sildenafil marketed by Pfizer. Both medicines work in the same way and are used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Sildenafil tablets are often referred to as generic Viagra because of this.

What would happen if I take too much Sildenafil?

Taking too much Sildenafil can cause side effects such as dizziness, headaches and indigestion.

What should I do if I accidentally take too much Sildenafil?

If you accidentally take more Sildenafil than you should, go straight to your nearest casualty department. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining tablets with you so that doctors know exactly what you took. Taking too much Sildenafil will not improve your erections further, but it can increase your risk of experiencing side effects.

What should I do if I experience an erection lasting more than 4 hours?

In rare circumstances, priapism may occur in people taking erectile dysfunction medication. Priapism is a long-lasting and sometimes painful erection. It is caused when blood flows into the penis but doesn't flow back out again. If you experience an erection lasting for more than 4 hours, go straight to your nearest casualty department. If priapism isn't treated quickly, it can cause severe damage to the penile tissue.

What should I do if I forget to take Sildenafil?

Sildenafil should be taken up to 30 minutes before you engage in sexual intercourse. If you do not take Sildenafil up to 4 hours before you have sex, you will likely experience erectile dysfunction. You should not take more Sildenafil to make up for a missed dose. Sildenafil should be taken as needed - do not take it every day.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Sildenafil?

Drinking alcohol may reduce the effectiveness of Sildenafil and make it more difficult to achieve an erection. For the best result with Sildenafil, you should avoid or limit your alcohol consumption before taking Sildenafil.

Does sildenafil make you last longer?

While sildenafil helps to achieve and sustain an erection in men with erectile dysfunction, it does not treat premature ejaculation. If you are experiencing premature ejaculation, speak to your doctor.

Can I take Sildenafil and Priligy together?

Priligy is a treatment for premature ejaculation. While both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation can be present at the same time, you should not take Sildenafil and Priligy together. Speak to your doctor if you are experiencing both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.

What is the best erectile dysfunction treatment for me?

No two men share the same experience with erectile dysfunction. Finding the best erectile dysfunction treatment for you can be challenging, as what works for one man might not work for you. Many factors should be considered when choosing the right erectile dysfunction medicine, including the frequency of your and your partner's sexual activity and your health. Here, we discuss how these ED treatments work and what sets them apart from one another. How erectile dysfunction treatments workAll ED medicines contain one of four phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) inhibitors: sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil, or avanafil. These inhibitors prevent an enzyme, phosphodiesterase, from breaking down a complex nucleotide, cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) that leads to an engorged penis.By prolonging the effects of cGMP, PDE5 inhibitors enable fuller, firmer erections for up to 36 hours after ingestion.ViagraThe most widely known ED treatment, Viagra, contains the PDE5 inhibitor sildenafil. Sildenafil was the first PDE5 inhibitor released to the market in 1998. It relaxes blood vessels while increasing blood flow to the genitals, leading to a strong erection. Viagra is available from online pharmacies and some supermarkets, though it cannot be bought without a consultation with a doctor.Common (affecting more than 1 in 100 men) side effects of Viagra include:A colour tinge to your vision or blurred visionDizzinessFeeling sickHeadachesHot flushes, including facial flushingIndigestionStuffy noseViagra, like all PDE5 inhibitors, cannot cause an erection on its own. Sexual arousal is still needed, and the medication requires about one hour to become effective. Most men find taking it one to four hours before sexual activity leads to satisfactory results.Timing is important to Viagra since its effects tend to wear off two to three hours after taking the medicine. If you have a predictable schedule and a long-time partner, you both may benefit from Viagra.Allow enough time for the medication to take effect, and remember Viagra, like all PDE5 inhibitors, is not an aphrodisiac. You need sexual arousal, intimacy, foreplay and a positive mood to become erect. You need continued sexual activity to maintain an erection.LevitraLevitra, with the PDE5 inhibitor vardenafil, can be taken as little as 30 minutes before sexual activity. Another benefit is the duration of an erection: up to five hours.Levitra's most common side effect is a headache. Other side effects, affecting roughly one in 100 men, are:Blocked noseDizzinessFlushingIndigestionLevitra is less affected by food than Viagra. You can take Levitra and still enjoy a romantic dinner before a sexual encounter. If you are uncertain about the likelihood of sexual activity, Levitra may be a good choice. You can dine, dance, and delight your date over several hours and still be ready to perform sexually if the evening unfolds in that way.CialisCialis incorporates the PDE5 inhibitor tadalafil. Of the four treatments, Cialis is the longest-lasting treatment for ED, allowing men to achieve erections up to 36 hours after taking the medication, ideal for those spontaneous moments.Common (affecting 1 in 10 to 1 in 100 men) side effects of Cialis include:FlushingHeadacheIndigestionNasal congestionPain in the muscles or backCialis can be taken once daily, though its side effects may last longer than either Viagra or Levitra. Cialis is a good medication to consider if you have a regular partner, you both enjoy spontaneous sex, and you are comfortable taking an ED medicine every day.SpedraThe SPE5 inhibitor avanafil is the active ingredient in the newest ED medicine, Spedra. Spedra can begin working in as little as 20 minutes, with effects lasting up to four hours.Spedra has just a few common (affecting roughly 1 in 10 to 1 in 100 men) side effects:FlushingHeadacheNasal congestionSpedra should ideally be taken on an empty stomach. Food will cause a delay in the medicine's action, which takes from 20 to 40 minutes with sexual stimulation.Vitaros CreamVitaros Cream is a topical treatment for erectile dysfunction. The cream is applied to the tip of the penis, just inside the urethra. It takes between 5 and 30 minutes for Vitaros cream to take effect, and the effects last for approximately 1 to 2 hours.Common side effects of Vitaros cream include:Genital pruritis (itching)Inflammation of the penile glans (balanitis)Mild to moderate local aching, burning, pain, redness of the penisPenile oedema (water retention)When you use Vitaros cream, you must wear condoms during sex to prevent your partner from coming into contact with the medicated cream.ConclusionYou may be troubled by ED for reasons other than physical limitations. Your issues could be psychological or emotional, so your doctor is in the best position to understand your concerns and offer solutions. The four common formulations, Viagra, Levitra, Cialis and Spedra, each offer advantages and drawbacks. No ED medicines are aphrodisiacs. You will require sexual stimulation to get and keep an erection. Share information with your sexual partner so you both have realistic expectations of these medicines.Viagra may require the longest activation time, up to one hour. Levitra and Spedra may take effect very quickly, in as little as 20 minutes. Cialis is the preferred choice when you want a reliable, firm erection anytime over the next 24 to 36 hours.Always speak to your doctor before taking prescription treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Why can't I get an erection?

Many men will experience occasional situations in which they are unable to get and maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. This is quite normal and can be caused by a number of factors such as stress, tiredness, anxiety or having too much alcohol. However, if you regularly have difficulty trying to achieve an erection for sex, then you may have erectile dysfunction. This is a relatively common condition among men over 40. According to the British Association of Urological Surgeons, erectile dysfunction affects half of men between 40 and 70 years old.Erectile dysfunction can be caused by physical or psychological factors, or even a combination of both.Physical Factors that Cause Erectile DysfunctionErectile dysfunction will usually be caused by physical factors in older men. These factors will affect the nerves and blood vessels responsible for causing an erection. These physical factors can include:AlcoholismDiabetesHardening of the arteriesHeart diseaseHigh blood pressureHigh cholesterolLiver or kidney diseaseMultiple sclerosis (MS)ObesityParkinson's diseaseErectile Dysfunction can also be the result of taking a particular medicine or using certain substances. While it's widely known that alcohol, smoking and illegal substances can affect the quality of your erections, medicines prescribed by your doctor or bought over-the-counter are overlooked culprits of erectile dysfunction. These medicines can range from commonly used antihistamines, used for hayfever, to prescription pain relief and antidepressants. If you suspect a medicine might be causing your erectile dysfunction, you should speak to your doctor for practical advice. Never stop taking a medicine which has been prescribed to you, unless your doctor has told you that it is safe to do so.Surgery, such as prostatectomy (the partial or total surgical removal of the prostate), can also cause erectile dysfunction to develop afterwards. Erectile dysfunction caused by prostate surgery can last from 3 months to 3 years, according to Cancer Research UK.Psychological Factors that Cause Erectile DysfunctionIn younger men, erectile dysfunction can commonly be caused by psychological factors. These psychological factors can include:AnxietyBeing scared that you can't get or maintain an erectionConflict in a relationshipDepressionEmotional distressWhen To See Your GP About Erectile Dysfunction? If you're concerned about your erectile dysfunction and want to seek treatment, then you should make an appointment with your GP.During your medical appointment, your practitioner will ask you about your lifestyle and relationships, and then conduct basic health checks, including your blood pressure and weight. They may also perform an examination of your genitals to determine whether any obvious physical factors may cause your erectile dysfunction.Lifestyle Changes to Improve Erectile DysfunctionThe treatment for your erectile dysfunction will depend on what is causing the condition. If, for example, high blood pressure is causing your erectile dysfunction, then your GP may recommend taking medicine to lower it. They may also ask you to make some lifestyle changes, such as losing weight if you are obese, eating a healthy diet and exercising more.Psychological Therapy for Erectile DysfunctionIf psychological factors cause your erectile dysfunction, then your GP may recommend that you go to counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to treat your underlying conditions, such as anxiety and depression.Medicine to treat Erectile DysfunctionSildenafil, sold as Viagra, is a very common medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction and can be bought without a prescription. It's important to note that taking sildenafil (Viagra) itself will not give you an erection. You will need to already be sexually aroused for sildenafil to take effect, and it will help you get an erection by increasing blood flow to your penis.Read more: What's the best Erectile Dysfunction treatment for me?According to the NHS, at least two-thirds of men experienced improved erections after taking sildenafil. You can buy Viagra in any pharmacy or make use of an online pharmacy such as Prescription Doctor to buy Viagra online instead. An online pharmacy will save you a lot of time, as you can simply order medicine online and make use of discreet next-day delivery.Prescription Doctor also provides alternative treatments that can help you with your erectile dysfunction, such as Cialis (Tadalafil) and Levitra (Vardenafil).

What is the difference between premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation are two common forms of sexual dysfunction which affect men of all ages. While it's possible to experience both conditions simultaneously, they should be treated separately. What is erectile dysfunction?Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which a man cannot attain or sustain an erection strong enough for penetrative intercourse. It is believed that more than 50% of men between the ages of 18 and 50 have experienced erectile dysfunction at some point in their life.Causes of erectile dysfunction include:AnxietyDeformation of the penis (Peyronie's)DepressionDiabetesHeart diseaseHigh blood pressureHigh cholesterolNerve damageStressIt is important to speak to your doctor about erectile dysfunction as it may be an indication of an undiagnosed underlying medical condition. Similarly to erectile dysfunction, this condition can be brought on by stress or anxiety. However, it is a condition in and of itself. It is estimated that 30% of men in the UK suffer from premature ejaculation. It's not uncommon to experience both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation at the same time - this can cause a vicious cycle as you try to juggle both conditions. If you notice you are losing your erection, you may try to focus on your partner and become excited. Then, you may begin to become over-excited and need to change your thoughts to delay your climax, which in turn can lead to you losing your erection once more. Here are some simple things to try if you are suffering from premature ejaculation:Try masturbating 1 or 2 hours before having sex.Practise deep breathing exercises.Delay the moment of sexual penetration and focus on foreplay.Wear thicker condoms.Take breaks to delay the urge to climax.Use the "pause-squeeze" technique to prevent yourself from ejaculating. If you do not find the above techniques effective, consult your doctor about treatment options.Treating Premature ejaculationIn the UK, Priligy is licensed for use in men who suffer from premature ejaculation. It contains an SSRI called dapoxetine, which increases the amount of serotonin and subsequently gives you greater control over your ejaculatory response. To find out more about treating premature ejaculation and to buy Priligy online from our trusted UK pharmacy, visit our website.Getting treatmentBoth premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction are relatively common, and you shouldn't be embarrassed to talk to your doctor about your condition, especially if it is impacting your mental health. We also offer Saturday delivery. Before you buy any treatments for either condition online, speak to your doctor so that they can rule out any underlying cause and evaluate your suitability for the medication. You should never take treatments for erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation at the same time.

How long does erectile dysfunction last after prostate surgery?

According to Prostate Cancer UK, approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.Fortunately, prostate cancer is very treatable, especially if caught early. According to the NHS, different treatments for prostate cancer include:SurgeryHormone therapyRadiotherapyHigh-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)CryotherapyThese treatments are essential for saving lives, but they can also cause significant side effects. One common side effect is erectile dysfunction. Why Does Prostate Surgery Cause Erectile Dysfunction? An erection is caused by the brain sending sexual arousal signals to nerves in the penis which stimulate muscles to relax. This allows blood to flow to the tissue in the penis, causing it to become erect.Erectile dysfunction refers to a condition that occurs when a man can’t achieve an erection or maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. Many factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction, including problems with the nervous system, blood vessels and hormones.Prostate cancer is commonly a slow-growing cancer. Doctors will recommend surgery if they believe that the cancer is contained in the prostate gland and hasn't invaded the surrounding areas. One surgery used to remove the prostate gland is called a radical prostatectomy. Your surgeon will remove your prostate gland, the surrounding tissues and the tubes that carry semen. Two small clusters of nerves control erections, located on both sides of the prostate. These nerves may become injured during the operation. Your surgeon may also purposefully remove these nerves if there's a chance that the cancer has invaded them. If these sets of nerves are removed, then you won’t be able to become erect without being assisted by medical devices. There is also a type of prostate surgery called nerve-sparing prostatectomy, where both bundles of nerves around the prostate are avoided. However, not everyone is suitable for this surgery, and eligibility also depends on the size and location of the cancer. How Long Does Erectile Dysfunction Last After Surgery?According to Cancer Research UK, after prostate surgery, you may experience erectile dysfunction for anything between three months and three years. This is because prostate surgery may injure the nerves, muscles or blood vessels required for an erection. Some men may also experience erectile dysfunction for the rest of their lives and require treatment to achieve an erection.Having a radical prostatectomy will also leave you with a higher chance of getting erectile dysfunction than having a nerve-sparing prostatectomy. According to the NHS, before treatment, 67% of men who had prostate cancer said that they could get erections firm enough for intercourse. After getting a radical prostatectomy, they were asked again after 6 months, and this decreased to 12%. In contrast, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, approximately 50% of men who receive a nerve-sparing prostatectomy who could have erections before surgery will maintain this ability long term. What Treatments Are Available?Fortunately, there are many treatments available for men with erectile dysfunction. Some treatments outlined by Cancer Research UK include:ED tabletsVacuum pumpsCreamsPenile injectionsPenile implant surgeryIf you'd like to learn more about these treatments or have any questions about erectile dysfunction, you should schedule an appointment with your GP.
