What is Levitra?

Levitra contains a phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) inhibitor called vardenafil. This drug makes it easier for erections to occur in those with erectile dysfunction.

Understanding Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is characterised by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. It is common in men over the age of 40, affecting approximately 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70, but can affect men at any stage in their life.

It's perfectly natural to experience occasional erectile problems. But constantly struggling to achieve or maintain an erection could be the cause of an underlying physiological or psychological condition.

Psychological causes of ED can include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress

In these cases, a doctor can prescribed cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), sex therapy or other psychotherapy treatments for the underlying condition.

Physiological causes of ED can include:

  • Deformation or damage to the penis
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Hormone deficiencies (such as low testosterone)

If you are suffering with erectile dysfunction, you should speak to your doctor. They will be able to make an assessment and determine the cause of your condition.

Your doctor may also be able to discuss various treatment options with you, including medication.

How Does Levitra Work?

When aroused, the tissue in the penis releases a chemical called cyclic GMP (cGMP) which causes vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels), increasing blood flow to the two cylindrical chambers (called corpora cavernosa) of the penis, producing an erection.

PDE5 inhibitors, such as Levitra, prevent an enzyme (phosphodiesterase) from breaking down the cGMP. As a result, the blood vessels remain dilated for longer, producing a longer lasting erection.

It's important to know that Levitra will not cause an erection without sexual stimulus (e.g. foreplay).

Who Suffers from Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction, despite popular belief, is a complex condition and there are many reasons why a man may suffer from erectile dysfunction. Although underlying physical issues may be to blame, such as diet, exercise or being overweight, it’s equally likely that erectile dysfunction is a result of psychological reasons.

Erectile dysfunction often presents itself when a man is feeling depressed or stressed about his life. This starts a vicious circle where the sufferer worries about the condition, thus increasing the psychological symptoms. Resolving any underlying stress can be a step in the right direction for treating erectile dysfunction.

Underlying medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, which can impact the efficiency of blood flow, can also cause erectile dysfunction. Therefore, it is important to speak to your doctor if you are experiencing erectile dysfunction, as it could be the sign of an undiagnosed condition.

How Do I Take Levitra?

Take 1 Levitra tablet between 30 minutes and an hour before you plan on having sex.

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.

Levitra is most effective when taken on an empty stomach.

Never take more Levitra than prescribed.

What Should I Do If I Forget to Take Levitra When I Should?

If you forget to take Levitra when you should, take it as soon as you remember.

Do not take more Levitra to make up for a missed dose.

What Should I Do If I Accidentally Take More Levitra Than I Should?

If you take more Levitra than you should, contact your doctor immediately.

Taking more Levitra will not treat your erection any more effectively, but may increase your risk of side effects.

Side Effects of Levitra

All medications, including those bought over-the-counter, carry the risk of causing side effects. Even though not everybody taking the medication will experience the side effects, it's still important to familiarise yourself with the supporting literature enclosed within the packaging of the medicine.

Side effects can include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Digestion problems
  • Nasal problems
  • Faster heartbeat
  • Back pain
  • Skin problems
  • Sleepiness.

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. Further information regarding the safety of this medication can be found within the patient information leaflet, which is enclosed within the packaging.

If you are concerned about any side effects, whether they are listed above or in the patient information leaflet, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist for advice.

If you experience the signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking Levitra and seek emergency medical attention. Go straight to your nearest accident and emergency department with you. Remember to take the packaging and any remaining medicine with you so that doctors treating you know exactly what you have taken.

Other Cautions

Always seek your doctor's advice before you order Levitra online.

Do not take Levitra past the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Do not throw unused medicine away via water waste. Take any unwanted or expired medicine to your pharmacy for them to dispose of safely on your behalf.

Always keep medicine out of the sight and reach from children and pets.
