Nasobec is a nasal spray which is intended to prevent the symptoms of hay fever from developing. It contains a corticosteroid (steroid) called beclomethasone.
Hay fever is the name given to a type of allergic reaction to pollen. Despite its name, hay fever is not necessarily triggered by hay fever, nor is a fever one of the symptoms.
In those susceptible to this condition, exposure to pollen from trees, grass and other plants can cause the nasal passages to become inflamed and irritated.
Other symptoms of hay fever include:
Hay fever can also exacerbate the symptoms of asthma and has the potential of causing an asthma attack. In those with asthma, hay fever may cause a tight feeling in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.
While there is no cure for hay fever, there are many ways of preventing symptoms from developing. Some of these methods include:
When these are not viable solutions, medicine should be considered. Speak to your pharmacist about treatments for hay fever, such as antihistamine tablets or decongestants.
If your symptoms don't improve after taking these medicines, or your symptoms worsen, arrange an appointment with your GP to discuss more treatment options.
Nasobec contains a corticosteroid called beclomethasone.
When administered nasally, it works to reduce swelling in the nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.
The inflammation occurs as an immune response to the particles of pollen. Similarly, to any other allergic reaction, your immune system seems these otherwise harmful particulate matter as a threat to your body.
In response, the cells in your body treat the pollen as if it were an infection and fire chemicals which cause inflammation.
Beclomethasone prevents the cells from releasing the chemicals, thus mitigating the allergic response.
In order for Nasobec to be effective, it needs to be taken regularly. For the best results, begin taking this medicine a few days before you are expected to develop symptoms.
Nasobec does not provide instantaneous relief from hay fever.
Typically, two sprays of Nasobec are administered in each nostril twice daily. You should try to take this medicine at the same time each day. If you struggle to remember when to take your medicine, you can try placing your medicine in a place you will most likely remember to take it, such as in your bathroom or on your bedside table. You could also set an alert on your mobile phone to remind you when to take your medicine.
Before you can use Nasobec for the first time, the nasal spray needs to be primed.
To prime your nasal spray:
If you have not used your Nasobec spray for a week or longer, repeat steps 2 through 4 to ensure your spray is working correctly.
To use your nasal spray:
If you need to administer a second spray, repeat steps 2 through 4.
Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the opposite nostril.
After using your nasal spray, wipe the nozzle with a clean, dry tissue or handkerchief and replace the dust cap.
More information on how to clean your nasal spray can be found in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
All medicines have the potential of causing side effects, though not everyone encounters them. Understanding the side effects and being able to identify them is important to your care.
If you experience the signs and symptoms of allergic reaction, cease using the medicine immediately and speak to your doctor as soon as possible. If your symptoms are severe, seek emergency medical attention as soon possible.
Rare side effects (affecting more than 1 in 10,000):
This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. A full list of the side effects can be found in the patient information leaflet which is enclosed with your medicine.
If you experience any side effects, whether they are listed above or in the patient information leaflet, speak to your doctor.
You can also report your side effects online via the Yellow Card Scheme.
If you use more than 8 sprays in 24 hours, tell your doctor immediately.
If you forget to take Nasobec when you should, use it as soon as you remember and continue to use your Nasobec as you normally would.
Do not use more Nasobec to make up for the missed dose.
You should not stop taking your medicine unless your doctor has informed you that it is safe to do so.
Nasobec does not provide instant relief from symptoms and can take a few days of continuous use before you will begin to notice the benefits.
If you are pregnant, suspect you might be pregnant, intend on becoming pregnant in the future or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before taking Nasobec to ensure the medicine is safe for you.
Nasobec should not affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.
