About Product

What is Nasobec?

Nasobec is a nasal spray which is intended to prevent the symptoms of hay fever from developing. It contains a corticosteroid (steroid) called beclomethasone.

What is hay fever?

Hay fever is the name given to a type of allergic reaction to pollen. Despite its name, hay fever is not necessarily triggered by hay fever, nor is a fever one of the symptoms.

In those susceptible to this condition, exposure to pollen from trees, grass and other plants can cause the nasal passages to become inflamed and irritated.

Other symptoms of hay fever include:

  • A runny nose
  • Blocked nose
  • Coughing
  • Earache
  • Headache
  • Itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears
  • Itchy, red or watery eyes
  • Pain around the temples and forehead
  • Sneezing
  • Tiredness
  • Weakened sense of smell

Hay fever can also exacerbate the symptoms of asthma and has the potential of causing an asthma attack. In those with asthma, hay fever may cause a tight feeling in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.

How can I prevent the symptoms of hay fever?

While there is no cure for hay fever, there are many ways of preventing symptoms from developing. Some of these methods include:

  • Avoid walking on grass
  • Keeping windows and doors shut when the pollen count is high
  • Not drying clothes outside
  • Reducing time spent outdoors
  • Remaining indoors
  • Showering and washing your clothes more regularly to wash the pollen off

When these are not viable solutions, medicine should be considered. Speak to your pharmacist about treatments for hay fever, such as antihistamine tablets or decongestants.

If your symptoms don't improve after taking these medicines, or your symptoms worsen, arrange an appointment with your GP to discuss more treatment options.

How does Nasobec work?

Nasobec contains a corticosteroid called beclomethasone.

When administered nasally, it works to reduce swelling in the nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.

The inflammation occurs as an immune response to the particles of pollen. Similarly, to any other allergic reaction, your immune system seems these otherwise harmful particulate matter as a threat to your body.

In response, the cells in your body treat the pollen as if it were an infection and fire chemicals which cause inflammation.

Beclomethasone prevents the cells from releasing the chemicals, thus mitigating the allergic response.

How to use Nasobec?

In order for Nasobec to be effective, it needs to be taken regularly. For the best results, begin taking this medicine a few days before you are expected to develop symptoms.

Nasobec does not provide instantaneous relief from hay fever.

Typically, two sprays of Nasobec are administered in each nostril twice daily. You should try to take this medicine at the same time each day. If you struggle to remember when to take your medicine, you can try placing your medicine in a place you will most likely remember to take it, such as in your bathroom or on your bedside table. You could also set an alert on your mobile phone to remind you when to take your medicine.

Before you can use Nasobec for the first time, the nasal spray needs to be primed.

To prime your nasal spray:

  1. Remove the clip and gently shake the bottle.
  2. Remove the dust cap
  3. Hold the bottle upright. Support the bottle from beneath using your thumb and place your index and middle fingers on either side of the nozzle.
  4. While holding the bottle away from you, another person or pets, press the nozzle down until a fine mist is sprayed.

If you have not used your Nasobec spray for a week or longer, repeat steps 2 through 4 to ensure your spray is working correctly.

To use your nasal spray:

  1. Gently blow your nose
  2. Press one finger against the side of your nose to close one nostril
  3. Start to breathe in through your nose slowly and insert the nozzle into your nostril.
  4. While breathing in, press the nozzle down. This will administer a spray of Nasobec.

If you need to administer a second spray, repeat steps 2 through 4.

Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the opposite nostril.

After using your nasal spray, wipe the nozzle with a clean, dry tissue or handkerchief and replace the dust cap.

More information on how to clean your nasal spray can be found in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
