How Does Orforglipron (Foundayo) Work?

Foundayo, with the active ingredient Orforglipron, is the latest in a long line of weight loss treatments to reach the UK market. Produced by Eli Lilly, the same company behind Mounjaro injections, it is the second GLP-1 treatment available as a pill, offering a strong rival to the Wegovy tablet.

However, to understand why it rivals these treatments, and why it may be a suitable treatment for you, we must first answer the question: how does Orforglipron work? This article covers everything you may need to know: how and why the active ingredient works in the body, how quickly you will start to lose weight on Foundayo, and how its effectiveness compares to its contemporaries.

What is Foundayo Used For?

Foundayo is a weight loss aid for those who need additional help reducing their BMI (Body Mass Index). It can promote weight loss of up to 12.4% after 72 weeks, and its ease of administration (a once-daily oral pill) makes it a promising new treatment in the UK weight-loss market. It is also prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Foundayo eligibility is based on BMI. If your BMI is 30 or higher, then you can take Foundayo to help you lose weight. Alternatively, if your BMI is 27 or higher and you have at least one weight-related health condition, you can also use Foundayo.

How Does the Foundayo Pill Work for Weight Loss?

Foundayo contains the active ingredient Orforglipron, and this is what makes the treatment effective for weight loss. It mimics the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which controls appetite within the body. Foundayo replicates this control and reduces your appetite, so you crave less food and consume fewer calories. This is the first effect, and it happens in the brain. The second effect takes place in the stomach.

Foundayo also causes a process known as delayed gastric emptying. This happens when food stays longer in your stomach because digestion slows. This makes you feel physically full longer, while GLP-1 targeting in the brain makes you feel mentally full longer. When paired together, orforglipron’s mechanisms of action have an effective rate of weight loss reduction.

Does Foundayo Work Immediately?

While Foundayo can start having positive effects the same day you start treatment, it will take much longer for noticeable results to appear. Foundayo, or any GLP-1 medication for that matter, is not a miracle treatment and requires dedication and patience to get the most out of it, including a healthier diet and regular exercise.

In your first couple of weeks on Foundayo, you should begin to see a drop in appetite levels and hunger cravings. This is a positive sign and should motivate you to stick with it and see visible weight loss results.

These results tend to become noticeable within the first two months, though the exact timeframe will differ for everyone. You should begin to see a reduction in your BMI as you gradually increase to higher doses. The longer you stay on the treatment, the greater the weight-loss effect will be. By the six-month mark, you should see a significant drop in weight.

What is the Average Weight Loss on Foundayo?

Based on extensive clinical trials, the current upper weight loss potential for Foundayo sits at a healthy 12.4% after 72 weeks. This exceeds other weight-loss options like Nevolat (8%) and Mysimba (8.1%), while falling short of treatments like Wegovy pills (13-17%), Wegovy injections (15-21%), and Mounjaro (21.6%).

The advantage that Foundayo has over the rest, though, is its ease of administration. Fear of needles? No problem. Don’t want to fast for 8 hours before you can take it, like you have to with the Wegovy pill? No problem there either. Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.

What Can Affect Weight Loss on Foundayo?

There are a number of factors that can affect your rate of weight loss while on Foundayo. Certain medical conditions, like an underactive thyroid, can alter how your body responds to the treatment. It shouldn't affect it in any harmful way, but it may slow your weight loss.

Other treatments can also affect Foundayo’s effectiveness, as the ingredients in the two may interact in undesirable ways. Insulin-based diabetes medications are an example of this and may pose a more serious risk if taken with Foundayo. You should tell your clinician about any medications you are taking, have recently taken, or may soon take before starting Foundayo anyway, regardless of whether they have been proven to interact with the treatment or not.

Lastly, the factor that will impact most people’s Foundayo weight loss: lifestyle changes. Foundayo will not work effectively on its own, and must be paired with a healthy diet and regular exercise to see high success rates. Cutting out sugary, fatty and processed foods in favour of fruit, veg and protein will all bolster the effectiveness of the treatment. Walking, jogging, cycling, swimming - anything to get the blood pumping will also help the pounds drop. Foundayo is a weight loss aid, not a magic pill, and when used alongside lifestyle changes, it can make them even more effective.

What is the Most Effective Dose of Foundayo for Weight Loss?

The most effective dose of Foundayo is the maximum 17.2mg, but you will not start on this strength. Like all GLP-1 treatments, Foundayo follows a strict dosage guide that increases the dose amount after at least 30 days. This allows your body to adjust gradually to the medication, minimising the risk of side effects.

If your clinician is happy with your progress, your dose will increase, or ‘titrate’, every month. Following this standard schedule, you will begin taking the 17.2mg dose at the start of the sixth month of treatment. However, if your clinician believes you are struggling with any aspect of the treatment, you may stay on a lower dose longer. Patience and dedication are key to losing weight on Foundayo.

Foundayo vs Mounjaro for Weight Loss

Strictly in terms of weight-loss rates and effectiveness, Mounjaro is the better option compared with Foundayo and the other available GLP-1 treatments in the UK. It has the highest weight-loss rate of 21.6% and is favoured by many. However, as mentioned earlier, Foundayo’s key attribute is its administration. Mounjaro is a weekly injection, which many will not find appealing, especially if they have to be the ones to inject themselves. By comparison, Foundayo is a simple daily pill, and it’s hard to imagine many people fearing that.

Foundayo vs Wegovy Weight Loss

As with Mounjaro, Wegovy outperforms Foundayo in terms of effectiveness, but not in administration. This comparison is actually a 2-for-1, as Wegovy comes in multiple forms. At the highest dosage, the injections have weight-loss rates of 18.7%, while the pills sit around 13% to 17%. Once again, though, Foundayo’s administration methods are superior in many regards.

Wegovy pens are once-weekly injections, so people who are unsure about needles may be put off them, too. The Wegovy pill, however, is much more similar to Foundayo, with a few key differences. The pill can only be taken after an 8-hour fast, which most will observe while they sleep and then take the pill first thing in the morning. An additional 30-minute fast is then required after administration to allow the medication to be properly absorbed through the digestive tract. You can't take it with food, drink other than water, or any other medications, and there’s even a 120ml limit on how much water you can take it with.

Foundayo has none of that. You can take it when you want, with or without food - so long as you take it at the same time every day, as this will yield the best results. So, if choosing between the two, it’s a case of sacrificing some weight-loss efficiency for a much easier administration method. But what about other factors in choosing the right treatment? The cost? The side effects? The availability? This is where Prescription Doctor comes in.
