Mysimba was one of the most established weight-loss tablets on the UK market, with consistent weight loss rates and a simple daily administration schedule. It became preferable for many - particularly those with an aversion to needles, as many other weight loss treatment options were injection-only. However, since the release and MHRA approval of the Foundayo pill, more and more people are considering their oral weight-loss options. Foundayo comes from the same company behind Mounjaro, Eli Lily, and while both are daily oral tablets, Foundayo and Mysimba work very differently.
We are increasingly asked about Foundayo compared with Mysimba: which is more effective, which has more side effects, how each works, and more. This article answers all of them, providing a comprehensive overview of both treatments, so if you are on the fence about which one is best for you, you have all the information you need.
Mysimba and Foundayo are two prevalent weight-loss treatments, taken as daily pills with steadily increasing doses. They are proven safe and effective methods to support weight loss for those with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health issue. To maximise their benefits, you must use them alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise, since they are weight-loss aids, not all-inclusive cures.
The table below is a ‘Foundayo vs Mysimba in a nutshell’ guide. It contains relevant statistics and information, and can be bookmarked and referred back to if you want to compare either or both treatments to other options.

Mysimba contains the active ingredients Naltrexone and Bupropion, which work together to reduce dopamine in the brain. More specifically, they reduce the dopamine associated with the rewarding feeling of overeating. Sugary, high-fat, and highly processed foods can create pleasant feelings in the brain, leading to a cycle of chasing the high that comes with them, which then leads to weight gain. Mysimba blocks these pleasant feelings, making it easier to stick to a diet.
Foundayo contains the active ingredient Orforglipron and also works in the brain, but it targets a different receptor. Instead of affecting dopamine, it directly impacts appetite, reducing it so you feel less hungry throughout the day. This leads to less snacking between meals, smaller portion sizes, and lower overall caloric intake.
Foundayo also has a secondary action called delayed gastric emptying. This means the medication slows how quickly food is digested in the stomach, creating a physical feeling of fullness to pair with the mental one. Together, these effects make Foundayo a highly effective weight-loss treatment.
Separate clinical trials suggest Foundayo is the more effective weight-loss option compared with Mysimba. Foundayo shows an average weight loss of 12.4% after 72 weeks, while Mysimba averages around 8.1% after 56 weeks. Not a huge difference, but it could still be a key factor when deciding which treatment is right for you.
The administrative process for taking Mysimba is fairly simple. When you begin treatment, take one tablet every morning, ideally with food. After a week, this will increase (or ‘titrate’) to one in the morning and one in the evening. Your third week will have you on two in the morning and one in the evening. Finally, your fourth week will be two in the morning and two in the evening, and you will stay on this schedule for the rest of your treatment.
Week | Mysimba Dose |
|---|---|
1 | One tablet, morning |
2 | Two tablets; one morning, one evening |
3 | Three tablets; two morning, one evening |
4 | Four tablets; two morning, two evening |
Foundayo's administrative process is even simpler. You take one pill a day, with or without food, and that’s that. Unlike Mysimba, which increases dosage by having you take more and more tablets, Foundayo uses separate pills in separate boxes with increasing strengths. The longer you remain on the treatment, the more potent your daily pill will become, reaching a potential 17.2mg, if needed.
The typical dosage schedule is illustrated below, but it is possible that you spend longer than 4 weeks on any dosage. This could be because your body needs more time to adjust to the side effects, or because you haven’t reached your weight-loss checkmark yet. Your clinician must approve each titration.

Any medication can cause side effects, so it’s important to know what to expect before starting treatment. Below are the ‘common’ and ‘very common’ side effects of Mysimba and Foundayo. Both also have rarer side effects, which are listed in the Patient Information Leaflets for Mysimba and Foundayo.
Side Effects | Mysimba | Foundayo |
|---|---|---|
Very Common (More than 1 in 10) | Nausea | Nausea |
Common (Up to 1 in 10) | Abdominal pain | Bloating |
Time to answer the big question: which is better, Mysimba or Foundayo? The debate depends on your personal situation and includes factors beyond strict efficiency rates. Cost, availability, and ingredients you may be allergic to should all factor into choosing the right treatment for you. So, by speaking with one of our clinicians today, we can work together to find the best option for you.
You may switch from Mysimba to Foundayo, or vice versa, but the process must be clinician-approved and closely monitored. This helps ensure your safety, as switching treatments can cause a flare-up of side effects.
Just because you have been on one treatment for an extended period doesn't automatically mean you will start the other at a higher dose. Conversion rates are determined on a case-by-case basis. Your clinician will help guide you through the change.
