Orlistat vs Foundayo

From the same creators as Mounjaro injections, Foundayo is the latest GLP-1 weight-loss medication approved for use in the UK. It shows high effectiveness and may appeal to many for its ease of administration compared with the Wegovy pill. But how does Foundayo compare to one of the older weight-loss pills, one that isn’t a GLP-1 at all?

Orlistat is a well-established weight-loss treatment, released for public use in 1999. Despite this, it still has many dedicated users, and many more are set to begin the treatment. While Foundayo is a daily oral tablet, Orlistat works completely differently, with different active ingredients, side effects, and effectiveness rates. So, how exactly does Orlistat vs Foundayo compare? This article will reveal all.

What are Orlistat and Foundayo?

Orlistat and Foundayo are two daily oral weight-loss treatments. Foundayo belongs to a class of treatments called GLP-1s, which indicates which receptor in the body it affects, while Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor. Both are strong, prescription-only medications that require a consultation to purchase; though neither is a complete weight-loss remedy, they are weight-loss aids. This means pairing them with healthy practices like diet and exercise is essential to get the most out of them.

How Do Foundayo and Orlistat Work?

Orlistat reduces fat intake from meals by up to 33%. It works in the digestive system by blocking lipase enzymes responsible for fat absorption. Reducing your fat intake also reduces your calorie intake, which is how it boosts weight loss when combined with other healthy lifestyle practices.

Orlistat blocks lipase enzymes, reducing the amount of fat your body absorbs by about one-third. This reduces your caloric intake and can improve overall health related to body weight.

By comparison, Foundayo affects both the digestive system and parts of the brain too. In the stomach, Orforglipron delays gastric emptying, meaning food takes longer to pass into your lower intestines. This creates a prolonged feeling of fullness; as you go about your day with a stomachful of food, you will have less desire for large meal portions or snacks between meals.

Foundayo also targets appetite receptors in the brain and signals to the rest of your body that you aren’t hungry. This works alongside physical fullness cues to help you eat less and consume fewer calories.

Orlistat vs Foundayo Weight Loss Results

When comparing weight-loss rates at the highest doses for both treatments, Foundayo comes out on top. It results in an average of 12.4% total body weight reduction, compared to Orlistat’s 5.9%. Foundayo is still a relatively new treatment, so its rates may average higher or lower than 12.4% over time, but Orlistat is unlikely to match its effectiveness.

How to Take Orlistat and Foundayo

As daily oral pills, the administration processes of Orlistat and Foundayo are quite simple, compared to some of their injection contemporaries like Mounjaro.

Firstly, Orlistat. You may take up to three Orlistat pills per day, depending on your food's fat content. If your meal doesn’t contain fat, you won’t need to take a pill after eating. For timing, take the pill just before eating, while eating, or up to an hour after eating. It should be taken with water.

Foundayo is less strict and can be taken at any time of day, with or without food or drink, as long as you take it at the same time each day. You should take only one pill per day, but the dosage will increase over time, or ‘titrate’. Foundayo titration follows a dosage schedule and usually occurs monthly.

Orlistat vs Foundayo: Which is Better?

When you hear the word ‘better’, your mind may jump to ‘which treatment has the better weight loss rates’, but more factors matter than effectiveness. Cost and availability also matter, as do side-effect frequency and severity. You may also be allergic to one or more ingredients in either treatment, making it unsafe to use altogether.

At the end of the day, there is no universal ‘better’, only what is best for your specific situation. We know that's not the most enlightening answer, but that is why our clinicians are always available to help; they can assess your situation personally.

Can I Change Between Orlistat and Foundayo?

Under clinician supervision, you can switch between Orlistat and Foundayo. You should not attempt to do this without their approval first, and they will help guide you through the process. You may have to re-adjust to new side effects and a new schedule, but your clinician will help you every step of the way.
