Mysimba vs Wegovy Pill

As two of the most prominent weight loss pills available on the UK market, Mysimba and Wegovy are often compared due to their similarities. But what about their differences? What are Mysimba and the Wegovy Pill?

Mysimba and Wegovy pills are daily oral weight loss tablets designed to support healthy habits like an improved diet and regular exercise, making weight loss easier. Like many weight-loss treatments on the UK market, Wegovy pills are known as a GLP-1 treatment, which identifies the class they belong to and the hormone receptor they target in the body. Mysimba belongs to a different classification, known as anorexiants, which are generally appetite suppressants. Wegovy pills suppress appetite as well, but in a different way, giving the two treatments a clear distinction.

Mysimba vs Wegovy Tablets: How Do They Work?

Mysimba works solely in the brain through its two active ingredients, naltrexone and bupropion. They affect dopamine pathways and lessen the rewarding feelings that occur after overeating, which in turn reduces your desire to overeat in the first place. By reducing those positive emotions after consuming sweet treats like chocolate and pudding, as well as highly processed or fatty foods like fast food or takeaways, you are more likely to stick to a healthier diet.

By comparison, Wegovy pills work in both the brain and the stomach, doing so with only one active ingredient, semaglutide. Once in your system, semaglutide slows digestion in the stomach, keeping you fuller longer and helping you eat less often. It also targets appetite receptors in the brain and signals to the rest of your body that you aren’t as hungry as usual. This also makes you more inclined to stick to a healthier diet. While Mysimba reduces the reward of overeating, Wegovy helps prevent overeating in general.

How to Take Mysimba and Wegovy Pills

Taking a daily pill may sound straightforward- just swallow it whole with water, right? But there is actually more to it than that.

Starting with the easier of the two to administer, Mysimba should ideally be taken with food once a day in the morning. This is the schedule for your first week - after that, it increases to one pill in the morning and one in the evening. Then, for your third week, two pills in the morning and one in the evening, and finally two pills in the morning and evening for your fourth week. Then stay at this frequency for the remainder of the treatment.

Wegovy pills are taken once daily, but their administration requirements are more precise. You must not have eaten or drunk anything for 8 hours before administration, and you must continue fasting for 30 minutes after administration. You can swallow Wegovy pills with up to 120ml of plain water, as food or other liquids in the stomach during absorption can reduce the medication's effectiveness. You must also not take any other oral medications while fasting or during administration.

Most people complete the 8-hour fast overnight while they sleep and take Wegovy first thing in the morning. This also means you cannot eat for the first half hour of the day, but for many, this is preferable to fasting for 8.5 hours during the day.

Wegovy Pill vs Mysimba Dosage Schedules

As discussed, the Mysimba dosage schedule increases weekly, starting at one pill per day and ending at four over the course of your first month. To recap:

Week 1 - One tablet every morning
Week 2 - Two tablets daily, one in the morning, one in the evening
Week 3 - Three tablets daily, two in the morning, one in the evening
Week 4 - Four tablets daily, two in the morning, two in the evening

Wegovy’s dosage schedule increases not in the number of pills, but in their potency instead. Your first month starts with 1.5 mg tablets, and the dose usually increases at the end of each month until you reach 25 mg tablets. Not everyone will reach this high, and not everyone will progress through the treatment as fast as one increase per month, but below is the general schedule.

Wegovy Tablet vs Mysimba Weight Loss Results

In clinical trials, Wegovy pills show higher weight loss rates than Mysimba pills. Wegovy averages around 13.6% body weight reduction, whereas Mysimba averages 8.1%, both at their highest doses, over 64- and 56-week periods, respectively. The treatments will respond differently for everyone, so you may find that these results do not match your personal experience, but they should serve as an idea of the treatments’ effectiveness.

Which is Better: Wegovy Pill or Mysimba?

In terms of average weight loss rates, Wegovy pills beat Mysimba. However, effectiveness isn't the only factor. Dosage schedules matter, as many may not like taking four tablets a day. Others may prefer more than one pill a day, as a consistent schedule may help them stick to other healthy practices.

Ingredients may also matter, as you could be allergic to an ingredient in one treatment but not the other. Overall, everyone’s preferences and situations are different, so there is no universal ‘better treatment’. This is why we offer so much help through our articles and our on-hand clinicians - we want to help find the better treatment for you personally.

Can You Take Mysimba and Wegovy Together?

You must not take Mysimba tablets and Wegovy tablets together. The effects could be harmful and may cause more frequent or severe side effects. If switching between the treatments (see paragraph below), you must ensure that you do not let the two medicines overlap in dosage schedules.

Can I Switch Between Mysimba and Wegovy Tablets?

You can switch between Mysimba and Wegovy tablets, but only under a clinician's supervision. Your clinician must approve and oversee the entire process to keep you as safe as possible. Side effects may flare up when you switch, and just because you were on a high dose of one treatment doesn't necessarily mean you will start at a higher dose of the other.
